The first thing any professional editor does when SLog3 footage hits the coloring timeline is to normalize it.

It’s flat, grey, washed-out look is not your final image, it’s just maximum dynamic range waiting to be activated.

Before touching contrast, saturation, or any creative grade, you apply a proper S-Log3 to Rec.709 transform or a technical LUT to bring the footage into a natural, viewable state.

This single step will give you a true baseline, reveals your highlights and shadows accurately, and saves you from chasing colors that were never meant to look “right” in log.

Once the image is normalized, every other adjustment becomes cleaner, faster, and more intentional.

That’s how good colorists keep their workflow sharp and their final output cinematic.

A cinematographer can make a good video for a professional outcome but the final look will be dependent on how the editor handles it.

It’s always good edit your own shoots and give it the exact mood and emotion as you want it.

Sometimes the trust you earn from a client doesn’t come from the part of the job you were hired to do, it comes from the extra value you carry in your head.

I got contracted to handle a full podcast production: bring my gear, set up, shoot, edit, color, and deliver.

Client even brought in her own sound engineer to handle audio. No wahala.

But when it was time to start, the sound guy was just there battling the setup, wasting our time. My client was already getting uncomfortable.

I quietly stepped in, used my small knowledge of sound architecture, arranged everything clean and sharp, and in less than 5 minutes we were rolling.

From that moment, she just looked at me differently with 100% trust.

Not because I talked too much, but because I solved a problem that wasn’t even my job.

That’s how you build your name in this industry, show up ready, and know just enough to save the day.
