How draft a basic bodice

A basic bodice block is the foundation for drafting blouses, dresses, and tops.
Measurements Needed
Bust
Waist
Back width
Shoulder length
Neck circumference
Bust point
Shoulder to bust point
Bodice length (shoulder to waist)
Drafting the Back Bodice
Draw a rectangle.
Width = ¼ Bust + ease (2–4 cm)
Length = Bodice length
Mark the neckline.
Neck width = Neck circumference ÷ 6
Neck depth = 2 cm
Draw the shoulder.
Shoulder length = actual shoulder measurement.
Drop shoulder by 2 cm for the shoulder slope.
Mark armhole depth.
Armhole depth = ¼ Bust + 4 cm.
Mark back width.
Back width = ½ Back width measurement.
Draw the armhole curve.
Shape the waist.
Use ¼ Waist measurement.
Add a waist dart if needed.
Drafting the Front Bodice
Use the back bodice as a guide.
Deepen the neckline (7–10 cm or desired style).
Mark the bust point.
Draw the bust dart from the side seam toward the bust point.
Shape the front armhole slightly deeper than the back.
Add waist dart through the bust point.
Final Step
Add seam allowances:
Neckline: 0.5–1 cm
Side seams: 1–1.5 cm
Hem: 2–3 cm
Once you have a basic bodice block, you can transform it into different blouse, gown, peplum, and dress styles.
