IBEBU-LEKKI SETS THE PACE; AS OLOWA'S KEKE JAJA INITIATIVE WINS AWARD FOR BEST DESTINATION ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE...

Lagos, Nigeria - 4th, January, 2025.

The Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, has been honored with an award for Best Destination Environmental Sustainability Initiative.

The Award, presented by Eko Destination Ltd, recognizes Hon. Olowa's innovative KEKE JAJA initiative, a waste management program aimed at keeping Ibeju-Lekki clean and promoting environmental sustainability.

Under Hon. Olowa's leadership, the _KEKE JAJA_ initiative has not only improved waste management in Ibeju-Lekki but has also created employment opportunities for residents. The initiative has also helped to promote a culture of environmental responsibility among residents, making Ibeju-Lekki a model for environmental sustainability in Lagos State.

Commenting on the Award, onbehalf of the team, Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon, CEO of Eko Destination Ltd and the National Vice President of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), the organizers of Destination Lagos Awards, said: "A tidy environment is a prerequisite for a thriving tourism industry. Hon. Olowa's KEKE JAJA initiative is a shining example of how local governments can take proactive steps to keep their environment clean, thereby making their destinations more attractive to tourists. We commend Hon. Olowa for his vision and commitment to environmental sustainability."

In the same vein,
Dr. Abiodun Lasisi, Consultant/MD of Eko Destination Ltd and Assistant Project Director of the Destination Lagos Awards 2024, emphasized the importance of developing valuable tourism products for Ibeju-Lekki. "We are committed to supporting Ibeju-Lekki Local Government in creating unique tourism experiences that showcase its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty," she said. "By building sustainable tourism products, we can attract more visitors, create jobs, and contribute to the local economy while preserving the environment for future generations."

Receiving the Award, Hon. Olowa expressed his gratitude to Eko Destination Ltd for the recognition. He attributed the award to the collective efforts of the people of Ibeju-Lekki and pledged to continue working towards a more sustainable future for the local government.

Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. T**e Benson-Awoyinka, has been honored with a special recognition award for her outstanding contributions to Lagos tourism development.

The award was presented by Eko Destination Ltd, a Lagos-based Destination Marketing Company, during the maiden edition of the Destination Lagos Awards and Ojuibile Eko Beauty Pageant held last Friday 27th of December, 2024.

The Award is a testament to Commissioner Benson-Awoyinka's tireless efforts in promoting Lagos as a premier tourism destination, in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's vision for the state's tourism industry.

Under her leadership, the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture has implemented various initiatives aimed at developing and promoting the state's tourism industry.

Some of her notable achievements include:

- Strategic Alignment of Policies and Programs:
Commissioner Benson-Awoyinka has ensured that the ministry's policies and programs are aligned with the principles of sustainability, recognizing the interplay between economic prosperity, environmental stewardship, and social inclusivity.

She has been a trailblazer in leveraging technology and innovation to enhance the tourism experience in Lagos, from digitizing heritage sites and cultural landmarks to implementing smart tourism initiatives.

The prestigious John Randle Cultural Centre, Onikan, Lagos, Nigeria, played host to the inaugural Destination Lagos Awards ceremony, recognizing outstanding contributions to Lagos' tourism development and reinforcing the city's position as a premier destination.

The much-talked-about and highly rated tourism event of the year 2024, brought together key stakeholders, industry leaders, and government officials to promote excellence, innovation, and sustainability in the tourism industry.

The ceremony showcased Lagos' unique cultural heritage and attractions, highlighting its potential as a world-class destination.

The event also featured keynote address by Prof. Funsho Afolabi, Chairman, Governing Council of Yaba College of Technology, who emphasized the significance of tourism in driving economic growth and development in Lagos and Nigeria at large.

Prof. Afolabi noted that tourism has the potential to create jobs, stimulate local economies, and promote cultural exchange.
He also highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism practices, emphasizing the need to balance economic development with environmental and social responsibility.

Furthermore, Prof. Afolabi commended the Lagos State Government for its efforts in promoting tourism development, citing initiatives such as the Lagos Tourism Master Plan.
He encouraged stakeholders to continue working together to develop the tourism industry in Lagos, emphasizing the need for collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to excellence.

The organizers also awarded 9 Big wigs in the industry and related industries with special recognition awards, including:

The highpoint of the event was the Oju Ibile Eko Beauty Pageant, where the contestant representing Ikosi Isheri LCDA, after a rigorous contest, won the maiden crown.
While the contestants from Epe LG and Ajeromi Ifelodun LG went home with the first and second runners-up positions, respectively.

The event also featured electrifying cultural performances by the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture, as well as a captivating performance by Bukola Akewi.
The audience were treated to various music performances, including 2 Algeria-born Lagos-based artistes.
A fashion show and exhibition by House of Mayrie added to the excitement of the evening.

Finally, closing remarks was done by the Consultant/MD Eko Destination Ltd and Eko Tourism Online Radio, who also double as the Assistant Project Director of Destination Lagos Awards 2024.

According to Dr. Abioudun,
"'As we come to the close of this unforgettable evening, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for making the inaugural Destination Lagos Awards and Ojuibile Eko Beauty Pageant such a resounding success.'

She further stated....
