Over 700 people have reportedly died during three days of violent protests in Tanzania following the country’s presidential election.
According to Daily Post, the demonstrations began on Wednesday after the election results were announced, which included the disqualification and arrest of key opposition figures.
The main opposition party, Chadema, claimed that about 700 people were killed nationwide. Party spokesperson John Kitoka told AFP that roughly 350 deaths occurred in Dar es Salaam and over 200 in Mwanza, with the rest spread across other regions.
The protests erupted after the incumbent president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, was declared the winner. The government has since shut down the internet, imposed a curfew, and restricted foreign journalists from reporting on the crisis.
