Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has raised alarm over the growing trend of bribes being paid in foreign currency, warning that the dollarisation of the Nigerian economy undermines the naira and fuels corruption.

Falana made the remarks on Sunday night, September 14 during an interview on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television. He argued that the acceptance and promotion of the dollar over the naira, even by government officials, was worsening the economic crisis and eroding confidence in Nigeria’s legal tender.

“The president was announcing gifts to footballers in dollars, not naira. It has to stop. We must promote the naira, not the dollar,” he said.

He reminded Nigerians that it is unlawful to reject the naira for transactions within the country: “As a matter of fact, it is a criminal offence to reject the naira. We need to stop paying fees and buying properties in dollars.”

Falana’s comments come amid rising concerns about the depreciation of the naira and the increased use of dollars in real estate, school fees, business contracts, and even illicit payments. He insisted that stronger enforcement of existing laws and stricter regulation of foreign currency use are necessary to restore the value of the national currency.

The Embassy of the State of Qatar in Nigeria has dismissed reports circulating online that claimed new and stricter visa regulations had been introduced for Nigerian travelers.Nigerian fashion

A ministry official told the BBC Pidgin on Wednesday, September 10 that there are no restrictions on Nigerians seeking to visit Qatar.

The denial follows viral reports alleging that Nigerians must now meet additional conditions before securing a visa, including mandatory return transfer bookings, hotel reservations, and restrictions limiting applications to only women or families. The report further suggested that staying in a 5-star hotel was a new requirement for visa qualification.

The Qatari Embassy said these claims are false and urged the public to rely solely on information shared through its official communication channels for accurate travel guidelines.

A former Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General of Kaduna State, Mark Jacobs, believes Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan should be allowed to resume at the Senate following her suspension.

The Senate on Tuesday acknowledged the lawmaker’s notice, informing the upper chamber of her intention to resume following her six-month suspension, but stated that her matter cannot be addressed until the court rules on the matter.

But Jacobs, who spoke on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, argued that the Kogi Central lawmaker does not need the finalisation of a judicial process to resume sitting at the National Assembly.

Two Nigerian women and a South African woman have been sentenced after they were caught running a brothel in George in the Western Cape province, South Africa.

The Nigerians, Patience Precious Abudu, 35, Success Egabor, 42, and South African Nontobeko Mathunjwa, 36, faced several charges, including trafficking in persons, running a brothel, and living off the proceeds of prostitution.

The trio pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against them.

They were sentenced in the Plettenberg Bay Regional Court on Wednesday, September 10, 22025.

This follows their arrest by members of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (known as Hawks).

The provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, Warrant Officer Zinzi Hani said the women were arrested between December 2023 and May 2024 by members of the Hawks’ Economic Protected Resources team (EPR) in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs for their involvement in trafficking in persons.

“It is reported that on December 16, 2023, two young girls were rescued from a brothel located in a complex in George. Upon their rescue, it was discovered that they were trafficked into South Africa. The three were then arrested and have been in custody since their arrest, up until they were sentenced,” Hani said.

The trafficked girls are Nigerian nationals.

Abudu was sentenced to a fine of R6,000 or three years imprisonment for living off earnings of prostitution, a fine of R6,000 or three years imprisonment for running a brothel, and a fine of R1,000 or six months imprisonment for contravening the Immigration Act. She was further ordered to compensate each victim R20,000.
