Man Who Went By 'Shrek' Pleads Guilty to Helping Steal $263 Million in Crypto
U.S. prosecutors reported a significant victory against a cybercrime ring with the guilty plea of Kunal Mehta, a 45-year-old from California, who admitted to conspiracy under the RICO Act and laundering at least $25 million in cryptocurrency.
Using various pseudonyms, including βShrek,β βPapa,β and βThe Accountant,β Mehta was part of a group that stole $263 million in crypto through social engineering and hacking, spending the proceeds on luxury items in Los Angeles and Miami.
He is the eighth member to plead guilty as part of a larger indictment involving 13 individuals, some as young as 18, and began operating in October 2023.
Mehta offered laundering services and obscured ownership of exotic cars, even delivering $500,000 in cash to associates involved in the scheme. The indictment lists 28 vehicles for forfeiture, including seven Lamborghinis and a McLaren.
