Let the countdown begin!

3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championship Update:

- 1weeks to go
- 43 countries entered
- 937 Athletes and Officials
- Host city: Abeokuta, Ogun State

With just two weeks to go, excitement is reaching fever pitch as Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State, prepares to welcome the continent’s finest young athletes for the 3rd African U18/U20 Athletics Championships, scheduled to hold from July 16 to 20, 2025.

A total of 43 countries have confirmed participation, with 937 athletes and officials already registered for the prestigious event.

Preparations are in full gear, with organizers working round the clock to ensure a world-class experience for all participants. From logistics and transportation to accommodation, feeding, competition services, and liaison support, every aspect is being meticulously fine-tuned to deliver a memorable championship.

Africa’s athletics powerhouses—Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt—are all confirmed to be represented, along with other strong contenders such as Ghana, Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Senegal, Uganda, and others.

Host nation Nigeria tops the list with the largest delegation, featuring 60 male and 50 female athletes, alongside 22 officials, making a total of 132 participants. South Africa follows closely with 42 men, 40 women, and 18 officials, summing up to a 100-member contingent.

Ethiopia is also coming in strong, registering 30 male and 27 female athletes, supported by 12 officials, for a total of 69 delegates. Kenya is not far behind, with 25 men and 25 women, and 17 officials, totaling 67 representatives. Algeria has confirmed 65 participants, comprising 30 men, 19 women, and 16 officials.

This latest prestigious sporting gathering comes just two months after Abeokuta successfully hosted over 15,000 athletes and officials during the Gateway Games 2024—the 22nd National Sports Festival.

The city earned high praise for its organization, hospitality, and infrastructure, positioning itself as a rising destination for major sporting events on the African continent.

With the upcoming African U18/U20 Championships and other international events in the pipeline, Nigeria is fast taking its place as a leading hub for sports development, youth engagement, and international competition.

The Championship, certified by the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), promises to showcase Africa’s next generation of track and field stars in a competition that combines youthful energy with continental pride.

SPORTS BAR:
• Zimbabwean Coventry takes over as IOC President
…Focus immediately on 2028 Los Angeles Olympics
…IOC in need of change of marketing strategies
…Former swimmer Coventry has long-standing ties with US
By Karolos Grohmann

Former Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry took over the leadership of the International Olympic Committee from Thomas Bach in a ceremony on Monday with the 2028 Los Angeles Games already threatening to fill her in-tray to overflowing.

Coventry, who starts her eight-year spell officially on Tuesday as the most powerful sports administrator in the world, became the first woman and first African to be elected head of the Olympic ruling body in March.

Much of the discussion during campaigning focused on the IOC's need for change in its marketing strategies with several top Olympic sponsors having left in the past 12 months.

However, with Los Angeles hit by protests against immigration raids, and relations tense between state and city officials, and the U.S. government, the 2028 Games have become the major talking point in the movement that would ordinarily be focusing on next year's Milano-Cortina Winter Games.

Coventry has long-standing ties with the United States, dating back to her time as a leading swimmer at Auburn University in Alabama. That will prove useful ahead of LA 2028, and she has said she will seek to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the Games.

Coventry will also need to find time to help secure the long-term finances of the movement. The IOC, which generates billions of dollars in revenues each year in sponsorship and broadcasting deals for the Olympics, has secured $7.3 billion for 2025-28 and $6.2 billion for 2029-2032. More contracts are expected for both periods.

COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITIES

Coventry is also expected to continue the IOC's plans to expand commercial opportunities for sponsors at the Olympics with the organisation's finances in a robust state and the privately-funded LA Olympics a good place to start.

Coventry needed only one round of voting to clinch the race to succeed Bach, beating six other candidates, making history for the African continent, with the IOC having been ruled for 131 years by European or North American men.

Her background and being the first female president will be assets in a diverse IOC membership and the international makeup of Olympic stakeholders.

On Monday she was handed the golden key to the IOC by Bach, who was the organisation's president for 12 years.

"I am really honoured I get to walk this journey with you. I cannot wait for anything that lies ahead," Coventry said in her address to IOC members and other Olympic stakeholders.

"I know I have the best team to support me and our movement over the next eight years."

Coventry will hold a two-day workshop this week to get feedback from members on key IOC issues.

"Working together and consistently finding ways to strengthen and keep united our movement that will ensure that we wake up daily... to continue to inspire," she said.

A seven-times Olympic medallist, Coventry won 200m backstroke gold at the 2004 Athens Games and in Beijing four years later.

"With her election, you have also sent a powerful message to the world: the IOC continues to evolve," Bach said in his speech. "With Kirsty Coventry, the Olympic movement will be in the best of hands."

AFN elects new board members as Dikko; Olapade NSC optimistic of Sport growth

By: Sunny Canto

Interestingly, Chief Tonobok Okowa has been re-elected as the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), during its Elective Congress held in Abuja on yesterday, 12th June; 2025.

Delta State origin and season Sport administrator: Okowa, the incumbent President was the sole candidate for the highly esteemed office of the Federation as the three other candidates eyeing the prestigious office did not reach the final hurdle.

Former Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence, Retired Commodore Omatseye Nesiama, had tactically and strategically pulled out of the race while another aspirant Constantine Itiako Ikpokpo fondly called Malik was beaten at the South-South Zonal election by a former sprinter, Gabriel Okon.

Sunday Adeleye, who was dreaming of occupying the number one position in Nigerian athletics was eliminated in the North-West Zonal election into the board by Ladan Abubakar Zurmi, who is now the first Vice President of AFN while Akuchukwu Aghazu Chineze, is the second Vice President.

After the election Okowa, said his victory at the polls is for all athletes’ and stakeholders saying: “Elections test our passion, but they must never fracture our athletics family.”

“I pledged to lead inclusively, ensuring every voice is heard as we forge a common ground for Nigerian athletics…my door and my heart is open for collaboration,” Okowa, a Vice President of the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA), stated.

He added that he would be pursuing a four-point agenda in his second tenure this includes aggressive grassroots talent hunt programme and education of our Nigerian athletes.

The slot for the athlete's representative is yet to be decided.

AFN new board members are:

★ Fatima Yusuf Olukoju (NAWIS Representative)
★ Olufemi Sule (North-Central)
★ Lekan Soetan (South-West)
★ Victor Okorie (South-East)
★ Gabriel Okon (South-South)
★ Samuel Onikeku (Military & Para-Miltary Representative)
★ Professor Frank Atare (NAPHERED)
★ Babayo Adamu (North-East)
★ Solomon Aliu (North-West)
★ Chief Tonobok Okowa - President
★ Ladan Abubakar Zurmi - 1st Vice President
★ Akuchukwu Aghazu Chineze - 2nd Vice President

Mallam Shehu Dikko, (Nation Sport Commission) Chairman, said, "We're optimistic for continuous Sport increase and record breaking milestone in Nigeria as in line with the Re-New-Hope-Agenda-Initaitive of President: Ahmed Bola Tinubu; (GCFR) with more grassroots and educational development in our Nation" he add.

National Sports Commission (NSC), Director General Honourable Bukola Olapade, urged the new board to do all they can to reposition Nigerian athletics.

“The ball is now in your court and you must not fail Nigerians in this task of repositioning our track and field.”

Meanwhile, four administrative persons were added to the AFN team.

They are:

✓ Dele Edokapyi - Lega Adviser
✓ Dr. Kolawole Oredipe - Auditor
✓ Dr. Nneka Anibeze - Chief Operating Officer
✓ Babajide Odeseji - Safeguarding Officer

The Performance Director Victor Okorie and the Technical Director of the Federation, Samuel Onikeku, who helped to drive AFN’s policies and programs in the last four years won their election into the board again.

For the next four years both men alongside Gabriel Okon, Fatima Yusuf Olukoju, Olufemi Sule, Lekan Soetan and Solomon Aliu are expected to build on the success story so far, as well as accelerate other new initiatives of the Athletics body.

As Technical Director, Onikeku, is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of AFN’s operations, including athletes development, coaching, and competitions.

It's interesting and imperative to state that this new AFN board is dominated by former athletes a development which athletics stakeholders consider as a good omen but could turn out to be a two edged sword if they fail to work as a team.

Solomon Aliu, Olalekan Stephen Soetan, Gabriel Okon, Olufemi Sule, Fatima Yusuf Olukoju are part of the new AFN board.
