SWAN charges Football stakeholders to rally round Kwara United FC for glory.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State Chapter has called on football stakeholders in the state to rally round Kwara United FC ahead of the 2024/25 Nigeria Professional Football League Season.

Kwara United finished 13th position with 12 wins, 15 draws and 11 losses at the 2023/24 Nigeria Professional Football League season.

In a statement signed by the Vice Chairman of the Association Mallam Toyin Saheed said Kwara United FC has the capacity of finishing in the top three next season as well as qualifying for continental football.

He said, “I am calling on football stakeholders in the state to rally round and support Kwara United FC next season. From Ex Kwara United players to the supporters, fans, okada riders, cab drivers, market women, commissioners, Special Advisers to the Governor and Executive Chairman of Kwara State Sports Commission to pray for the success of the club. We want to see more spectators fill the stadium next season in order to give a sense of belonging to the players playing for the state.

“Kwara United FC remains the only professional club in the state playing in the NPFL and we must pray for the club never to fail. Last season, the club struggled during the first half of the season before getting its footings towards the end of the league.

“I am aware of the pedigree of the Chairman Kwara United FC, Kumbi Titiloye; he has led Kwara United to the CAF Confederation Cup (three season ago), the people of Kwara State next year wants to play the continental football at home in order to boost the economic value of the state”.

He urged the Chairman of Kwara State Football Association, Mallam Idris Abdullahi (Thuraya) to ensure the state witness NPFL next season by continuing to maintain the football pitch.

Saheed said, “The FA Chairman, Idris Abdullahi used his good office in ensuring AU Mustapha (SAN) bankrolled the re-grassing of the Kwara State Stadium football pitch. I want to urge you to continue maintaining it in order for us to witness football in Ilorin next season”.

“I want to thank the Executive Governor of Kwara State, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for ensuring the players get their entitlements when due in the last five years”, he added.

When I arrived in Benin City at that time, I was 17, you had Harrison Omuko, Chico, our captain, we had Augustine Eguavoen, who was my GM (general manager of Bendel Insurance),' Odemwingie said.

We had a good coach, Solomon Ogbeide . So, there were a lot of people to learn from - there was Chukwudi Nworgu as well, he was playing for the under-17 national team at the time.'

These were guys I was learning from. Things like this used to make me so excited about football,” he stated in a video on Twitter.

So, when I saw those guys regularly, every day, those were things that provoked me to work hard. I saw international people in front of me daily.'

Peter also dispelled any doubts about his Nigerian football pedigree, recalling the gruelling journeys he made across the country to play in the NPFL.

Abraysports FC wins AMAPRO championship

Abraysports FC have retained AMAPRO Football Championship beating Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL All Stars 6-5 on penalties.

The Nigeria Nationwide League One, NLO side who failed to win a single match in the championship had to rely on heroic goalkeeping of Jamiu Ibrahim to defend the tirle they won last year at the same Kwara Football Academy, KFA Pitch in Ilorin.

An own goal from Hammed Yaqub gave Abraysports an early lead of a pulsating final.
Olatunji Sunbomi went close to double the lead for the champions in the 17th minutes but had his effort went inches off target.
It was all about Abraysports in the first half who could have score more.

The second half saw a new look and ambitious NPFL All Stars as they tweaked their team and formation that handed them control of the game.

The trio of Wasiu Alalade, Godwin Oshagbemi and Waheed Adebayo went close to find the equalizer for the NPFL side but were denied by heroic goalkeeping of Akinniyi Toheeb and bit of ill luck.

They would soon restore parity in the 65th minutes through Issa Gata’s sublime half volley.
Both teams created lots of scoring moments till the closing stages but couldn’t make it count.

Abraysports introduced Ibrahim Karim for the shootouts and the young goalkeeper justified the coach’s believe in him as he stopped two of the spot kicks to help Abraysports defend the title they won last year.

NPFL All Stars’ Oshagbemi won the King of AMAPRO while KFA’s Uthman Tajudeen won Prince of AMAPRO award.

BrainBehind AMAPRO, Shogo Shodunnke who appreciated the sponsor and partners for the success of the championship noted that the tournament has been to achieve its desired aim of bridging the gap between Amateur players and professional footballers.

Shodunnke said the tournament will continue to grow in leaps and bounds with more support from relevant Stakeholders who shared the same dream with the project like Bet9ja Foundation and others partners.

The Governor of Kwara State who was represented by Executive Chairman of Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bola Mogaji said AMAPRO Football Championship has assisted the state government in encouraging the youths in the state by giving hope through football.

The 2024 AMAPRO Football Championship was proudly sponsored by Bet9ja Foundation and collaborations with Hudl Wyscout, 4th Brother Clothing, Darajeph Technologies, Stefolga Group

NPFL Signs N5.03bn Five-Year Broadcast Deal With Startimes.

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Thursday in Abuja signed a five-year broadcast sponsorship rights contract worth N5.3bn with Cable TV giants StarTimes, Completesports.com reports.

NPFL Chairman Honorable Gbenga Elegbeleye told the media at the signing ceremony that StarTimes will pay an initial N1.06bn in the first year of the sponsorship package and an annual increment of N50 million for four years from 2023 to 2028

Elegbeleye added that the signing of the contract is a fulfilment of his promise to Nigerians that Nigeria’s domestic football league will return to television commending the cable TV company for partnering with the NPFL to improve the domestic league

“It is a 5-year deal worth N1.06bn with StarTimes, with a 50 million naira increment annually. They will kick off by broadcasting two matches from November 18 kickoff date before increasing it to four matches weekly from February 2024, then it will increase to eight matches per week for the rest of the contract,” Elegbeleye divulged.

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, said the broadcast deal was aimed at driving the interest of football fans in the country to the NPFL games like the foreign football leagues such as the English Premier League (EPL).

Gusau stated that the contract signing is coming at this time because the NPFL was tidying the broadcast deal to ensure that it benefits all the parties involved, adding that he is happy that Nigerians can watch the NPFL matches from the comfort of their homes.

“Making our domestic league among the best in Africa is one of my cardinal programs and with our league being watched on live TV. It will curtail bad officiating, help market the league and showcase our talents to the world. I must commend both NPFL and StarTimes for working assiduously to broker the deal,” the NFF boss remarked.

Earlier, the CEO of StarTimes, Joshua Wang, announced that the company won the broadcast rights of the top tier Nigeria Football League for five years effective from 2023.

“Today, we are pleased to announce that we have secured the exclusive rights to broadcast four Matches of NPFL per Round in the 2023/24 season and 2024/25 season; and eight matches of NPFL per Round in the 2025/26 season, 2026/27 season and 2027/28 seasons,” Wang stated.

“This means that StarTimes will be the only platform where you can watch the best of Nigerian football every week. We will also have the first pick of the matches we want to showcase, ensuring that we bring you the most exciting and competitive games in the league. This deal is a win-win situation for both parties.”

Wang added: “For StarTimes, it means that we can offer our subscribers more value and variety in our sports content. For the NPFL, it means that they can benefit from our expertise and experience in producing and broadcasting high-quality football matches. Promoting and developing the league is not only a business goal for us but also a social responsibility. We are committed to growing the sports industry in Nigeria by collaborating with our local partners and sharing positive Nigerian stories.

“We believe that this deal will enhance the visibility and popularity of the NPFL, both locally and internationally. We hope that it will also inspire and motivate the players, coaches, and clubs to perform at their best and showcase their talents. We are confident that this partnership will bring more joy and excitement to millions of football fans in Nigeria and beyond,” he concluded.
