U.S. President Donald Trump will host leaders from five African nations in Washington next week to explore what the White House described as “commercial opportunities.”

The meeting, set for July 9 at the White House, will include discussions and a lunch with leaders from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, and Senegal, according to a White House official.

“President Trump believes that African countries offer incredible commercial opportunities that benefit both the American people and our African partners,” the official said, explaining the motivation behind the gathering.

Earlier reports by Africa Intelligence and Semafor indicated the Trump administration would hold a broader summit with these countries from July 9 to 11.

Under Trump’s leadership, the U.S. has significantly cut foreign aid to Africa, arguing that much of it is wasteful and does not align with his “America First” agenda. Instead, the administration says it aims to prioritize trade and investment that foster mutual prosperity.

On Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio underscored this shift, announcing that Washington was moving away from what he called a charity-driven aid model and would instead support nations that show “both the ability and willingness to help themselves.”

Troy Fitrel, a senior official in the Bureau of African Affairs, said in May that U.S. diplomats on the continent will now be evaluated based on commercial agreements secured, outlining it as the cornerstone of America’s new engagement strategy in Africa.

Court orders Senate to recall suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ordered the Senate to recall the suspended lawmaker representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a judgment delivered today July 4, the presiding judge, Justice Binta Nyako, described as “excessive”, the six-month suspension the Senate slammed on her ion March 6 following her clash with Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

While delivering her judgement, Justice Nyako faulted the provision of Chapter 8 of the Senate Standing Rules as well as section 14 of the Legislative Houses, Powers & Privileges Act, declaring both as overreaching.

The court stressed that the two legislations failed to specify the maximum period that a serving lawmaker could be suspended from office.

According to the court, since lawmakers have a total of 181 days to sit in every legislative circle, the six-month suspension handed to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was akin to pushing her away from her responsibilities to her constituents for about 180 days.

She held that though the Senate has the power to punish any of its members who err, such sanction must not be excessive to deprive the constituents of their right to be represented.

Nevertheless, the court held that the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, was not wrong to have denied the plaintiff who was not on the official seat that was allotted to her, the opportunity to speak during plenary.

Justice Nyako equally dismissed Akpabio’s contention that the court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the suit which he said bordered on an internal affair of the Senate.

Ghana's Minister for communication Sam George slams viral gay kiss at Ghana’s Independence Arch, calls it 'abhorrent disrespect'

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram and Ghana’s outspoken anti-LGBTQ+ advocate, Samuel Nartey George, has broken his silence on the now-viral photos of a South African gay couple kissing at the Independence Arch in Accra.

While many praised the act as bold and progressive, critics called it “disrespectful” and demanded a response from Mr George, especially given his lead role in the promotion of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

In a strongly worded statement posted on social media, Sam George described the photo as a “gross affront to Ghanaian cultural values,” calling the individuals involved “useless” and “miscreants.”

“The disrespect of our national symbols is despicable to say the least,” he wrote.

Oluwaseun Kassim, a 29-year-old Nigerian national, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after being found guilty of aggravated sexual assault in Kankakee County, Illinois.

As part of a nationwide operation to apprehend illegal immigrants with criminal histories, Kassim was taken into custody in Chicago.

In a statement released on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, ICE stated that Kassim is being held and may be taken away.

His case is one of the most serious in its most recent sweep, which targeted people who were thought to be a danger to the public.

In the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term, ICE has detained 65,682 illegal aliens, including those who pose a threat to ‘’national security and public safety, and arrested over 66,463 illegal aliens.’’

As of early June, there were roughly 51,000 undocumented migrants in ICE detention, the most since September 2019.

“You don’t kill purpose by changing a name” – Terry G says his journey was divinely redirected after becoming Terry Gzus

Singer Terry G has responded to those who claim his career ended the day he changed his name to *Terry Gzus*.

In a recent Instagram post, he shared a bold photo with a caption setting the record straight.

“They say my career ended the day I became Terry Gzus. But let me set the record straight, my journey didn’t end, it was divinely redirected,” he wrote.

He clarified that *Gzus* is not referring to Jesus Christ but rather “a reflection of the God in me — fearless, chosen, and unapologetic.”

Terry G added, “You don’t kill purpose by changing a name. What’s ordained can’t be cancelled.”
