Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked widespread reactions on social media after expressing optimism about the eventual release of his longtime associate, Ramon Olorunwa Abbas, popularly known as Hushpuppi, who is currently serving a pr!son sent£nce in the United States for fravd-related off£nces.
Speaking in a podcast interview that has resurfaced online, the award-winning singer described Hushpuppi as a friend and said he was looking forward to his rel£ase.
"Hushpuppi is coming out soon. My prayers go out to him, he's my friend. He's coming out soon. He l!ved life. Some people are happy to ball for f!ve years, and that's it," Davido said.
The singer, however, maintained that he was unaware of Hushpuppi's crim!nal activities during the per!od they associated.
"He was my friend. I just see him around; I never really knew what he was doing. But he lived a good life," Davido reportedly said, adding that he does not support fravd and believes the consequences are not worth the temporary lifestyle it offers.
Hushpuppi was arr3sted in Dubai in June 2020 before being extrad!ted to the United States. In November 2022, he was sent£nced to 135 months (more than 11 years) in federal pr!son after pl£ading gu!lty to consp!racy to engage in money lavndering linked to large-scale business email compromise and other fravd sch£mes.
According to publicly available records from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Pr!sons, Hushpuppi remains incarc3rated at FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, with a projected release date of August 6, 2029.
Davido's remarks have reign!ted discussions among Nigerians on social media. While some interpreted his statement as an expression of hope and loyalty toward a friend, others questioned the timing of his comments given Hushpuppi's official release schedule.
