The Ride I Will Never Forget
My first time driving for Uber, I picked up a woman somewhere around the Lekki axis. When I got to her location, a guy walked her out of an apartment and they immediately started arguing about money right there in front of me. She was saying what he gave her wasn’t complete. I quietly put two and two together but it wasn’t my place to say anything.
On our way to the mainland, she couldn’t stop talking about how she got shortchanged. She said she had been with the man and his friends for three days straight and the money he gave her wasn’t worth it at all. She even complained that he didn’t add her Uber fare on top.
At some point I looked in my mirror and saw her changing her clothes into something more decent. I just assumed she was probably going back to her family and didn’t want to show up looking like that.
Then she dropped the bombshell. She asked me if she could pay “in kind.” She even told me the driver that br0ught her earlier had collected. I told her straight up, that one is not for me. I want my ₦28,000 cash. She kept dressing slowly like she was giving me time to change my mind. I didn’t budge.
We got to her destination and she was still complaining about the man, saying she needed to call him for her balance.
At the gate she made a call and a man came outside with a small ch!ld. The ch!ld was shouting “Mummy” and running to her. I was just observing everything quietly. She got down from the car looking tired and walked inside slowly.
I sha decided to do small play with the man. I told him jokingly that I liked his sister. He just laughed and said “You wan collect my wife?” My jaw nearly dropped.
He explained they had been married for three years. He said she told him she went to Ibadan for her catering work and he was even the one that told her to take Uber when she got back to Lagos so she wouldn’t stress herself.
I just drove off. That man genuinely had no idea what was going on. Hmm. 🤔
