From Yoruba land to Ebira land, Masquerades are becoming nuisance - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned what it described as the rising excesses of masquerade activities across parts of Nigeria, warning that the trend now constitutes a threat to public peace and religious freedom.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 18 December 2025, the Kano State Chairman of MURIC, Malam Hassan Sani Indabawa, decried an incident in Obangede, Kogi Central, where a masquerade allegedly assaulted and humiliated a Muslim woman for wearing a niqab.

According to the Islamic human rights organisation, the incident occurred on 25 November 2025, when the victim, identified as Bello Ize Halimat, was reportedly harassed, physically assaulted and verbally abused while going about her lawful activities.

MURIC described the attack as a violation of fundamental human rights and an extension of what it called the long-standing abuses committed by some traditionalists under the guise of cultural practices.

The group recalled that it has consistently spoken out against cases in which masquerades allegedly assaulted Muslims, invaded mosques and violated religious rights, particularly in parts of Southwest Nigeria, noting that similar incidents have now spread to North-Central states such as Kogi.

The organisation further cited previous violent incidents linked to masquerade activities in Ebiraland, Kogi State. One such case, it noted, occurred in January 2025 during a masquerade festival in Okehi Local Government Area, when clashes between youths from Obangede and Okaito-Usungwe reportedly led to the death of a woman and injuries to several others.

MURIC also referenced incidents where masquerades allegedly flouted local laws and directives, leading to confrontations with security agencies and community leaders. It recalled an August 2024 incident in Eika Adagu, Okehi LGA, where a masquerade costume was reportedly burned by community leaders while enforcing a “no masquerade” directive.

Describing the latest assault as “primitive, morally reprehensible and unjustifiable,” the group warned that continued tolerance of such acts could further inflame tensions and undermine social harmony.

MURIC called on the Kogi State Command of the Nigeria Police to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged assault on Bello Ize Halimat and to prosecute those found responsible, including their handlers.

The group also urged the Kogi State Government to impose stricter controls on masquerade activities, confining them in a manner that ensures peaceful conduct, respect for the rule of law and protection of citizens’ rights, regardless of religious or cultural differences.

100 Days in Office: Hon. Muhibat Rufai-Adeyemi Marks Milestone, Touches Lives, Leads Crackdown on Fake Drugs in Ojo

Hon. Muhibat Rufai-Adeyemi, Executive Chairman of Ojo Local Government, has marked her first 100 days in office with visible achievements that cut across social welfare, grassroots development, and public safety.

Since assuming office, the chairman has rolled out people-oriented initiatives aimed at improving the lives of residents, particularly women, youths, and the most vulnerable. Beneficiaries across wards in Ojo have attested to targeted empowerment programmes, community interventions, and renewed attention to local needs.

A major highlight of the administration’s first 100 days is the discovery and exposure of an illegal fake and expired drugs factory operating within the local government area. Acting on credible intelligence and in collaboration with security agencies, the illegal facility was uncovered, dealing a significant blow to counterfeit drug syndicates and reinforcing the council’s commitment to public health and safety.

Hon. Rufai-Adeyemi described the breakthrough as a clear message that Ojo will not be a haven for criminal activities, especially those that endanger lives. She reaffirmed her administration’s resolve to continue working with law enforcement and regulatory bodies to protect residents.

As she celebrates the 100-day milestone, the chairman reiterated her pledge to deliver transparent, inclusive, and impactful governance, assuring the people of Ojo Local Government that the coming months will bring even more developmental strides.
