On track to set an unprecedented benchmark, Wema Bank’s H1 2025 Unaudited Financial Results reported remarkable financial upturns including a Profit Before Tax (PBT) of ₦101.2 billion, representing a 231% increase compared to ₦30.55 billion recorded in the corresponding period of H1 2024. The Bank’s Gross Earnings also rose to ₦303.20 billion, reflecting a 70% increase from H1 2024’s ₦178.63 billion. Interest Income grew by 65% year-on-year to ₦240.12 billion (H1 2024: ₦145.53 billion), while Non-Interest Income surged by 91% year-on-year to ₦63.08 billion (H1 2024: ₦33.10 billion).

Wema Bank’s balance sheet remained robust and well-structured, with total assets rising from ₦3.585 trillion in HI 2024 to ₦3.963 trillion in H1 2025; deposit base growing by 3% from ₦2.523 trillion in FY 2024 to ₦2.60trillion, and Loans and Advances growing by 19% to ₦1.426 trillion in H1 2025, compared to ₦1.201trillion reported in FY 2024. The Bank’s Non-Performing Loan (NPL) ratio stood at 3.17% as at H1 2025, reflecting the Bank’s continued focus on maintaining asset quality. These indicators not only reflect Wema Bank’s resilience and efficiency, but also its strong capacity to sustain its growth momentum and continue to deliver optimum value to its stakeholders.

Commenting on the outstanding results, Wema Bank’s Managing Director/CEO, Moruf Oseni, affirmed the Bank’s commitment to maintaining the upward growth trajectory in its financials and delivering optimum value to every stakeholder of Wema Bank. According to him, “For 80 years, Wema Bank has redefined impossible, consistently breaking new ground and raising the bar in delivering positive impact. 3 years ago, we took our Profit Before Tax from ₦14.75 billion in 2022 to ₦43.59 billion in 2023, and in 2024, our PBT stood at an impressive ₦102 billion. Now, just halfway through 2025, we have achieved over 99% of our 2024 full-year PBT in just H1, and for us, this is just a starting point”.

“As a Bank, we have remained committed to surpassing expectations and redefining limitations and this is a standard we are prepared to uphold relentlessly. Wema Bank is the Bank that works for all and we will continue to pull all stops in delivering optimum value to every stakeholder, from our shareholders to customers, employees, partners, regulators, and every person and institution who has played a part in our 80-year journey and beyond,” Oseni concluded.

For 8 decades, Wema Bank has built a legacy of empowering lives, breaking untapped ground, setting industry standards, proving unmatched resilience and delivering unparalleled value to Nigerians of all ages, from all walks of life and across diverse verticals and industries. These Unaudited Financial Results further reflect the Bank’s strength and capacity to sustain its legacy in the decades to come.

Ambassador Wole Akanni Duro-Ladipo: A Global Cultural Architect Honored
..A Lifetime of Promoting Culture and Tourism Across Continents Recognised with a Doctorate of Philosophy in Humanities

By Sulaimon Abiodun

In a poignant tribute to decades of cultural advocacy, heritage preservation, and transcontinental tourism promotion, Ambassador Wole Akanni Duro-Ladipo has been conferred an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities by the United Graduate College and Seminary International in the United States.

The recognition reflects not only a remarkable individual journey but a sustained global mission to elevate African culture and foster intercultural harmony. Described by the awarding institution as a “pioneer of purpose-driven cultural diplomacy,” Ambassador Duro-Ladipo received the prestigious honour in a ceremony attended by diplomats, scholars, and cultural influencers.

The institution, founded in 1982 as a non-traditional educational model, lauded his groundbreaking “Authorship Education” philosophy—a framework that redefines knowledge-sharing through indigenous wisdom, storytelling, craftsmanship, and experiential learning, referencing that, the recognition was not only in celebration of his achievements but also a tribute to his life’s work in deepening intercultural dialogue, preserving indigenous heritage, and inspiring a new generation of cultural thinkers.

For many who have followed Nigeria’s cultural diplomacy on the world stage, the Duro-Ladipo name resonates like a deep drumbeat of Yoruba theatre, folklore, and festival traditions. As the son of the legendary dramatist, Duro Ladipo, who revolutionised Nigerian theatre with works like Oba Koso and Moremi, leaving behind a legacy that not only inspired modern African drama but laid a blueprint for cultural expression that balances authenticity with innovation, Wole Akanni Duro-Ladipo born in 1969 in Ibadan, Oyo State, has not only carried the torch forward but expanded its reach to global platforms, extending the drumbeats of Yoruba identity to stages, classrooms, galleries, and conference halls across Europe, the Americas, Asia, and Africa.

His life's work has been to ensure that African stories are told by Africans, through authentic lenses, in dignified spaces—not as exotic curiosities, but as pillars of universal value. From staging traditional Yoruba plays in Europe to curating art and culture festivals in Latin America, Asia, and Africa, Ambassador Duro-Ladipo has built cultural bridges across continents, using the power of performance, storytelling, and community to dispel stereotypes and elevate the universal values embedded in African traditions.

In an age where soft power is increasingly recognised as a tool for global influence, Ambassador Duro-Ladipo has been a quiet force behind Nigeria’s cultural visibility. As an advocate for tourism as a vehicle for national development, he has worked closely with governments, traditional institutions, and cultural agencies across the globe to champion destination marketing, cultural exchange programmes, and policy advocacy that prioritise heritage preservation.

Ambassador Duro-Ladipo’s roots run deep in Yoruba heritage. The son of Nigeria’s iconic dramatist Duro Ladipo, he inherited a rich legacy of theatre, folklore, and ritual performance, which he has carried into the modern world with renewed vigour and global resonance.

Educated at St. Paul Anglican Primary School, Oba Akimole Memorial High School, and St. Andrews College of Education, he furthered his studies in Political Science and English at the University of Ibadan, where he also earned his certification as a professional teacher. He later pursued a master's degree in Business and Marketing, and continued his educational journey in the United States—where he also served as a correctional officer in Dallas, Texas.

In every city, stage, or seminar room he enters, Ambassador Duro-Ladipo brings with him the pulsating energy of African tradition. As the founder and CEO of First Eye Concept, a platform committed to promoting peace and unity through cultural exchange and tourism, he has created enduring bridges of understanding between Africa and the world.

From staging Yoruba plays in Europe to launching cultural heritage projects in Brazil and hosting international festivals in Chicago, his footprint spans Latin America, Asia, North America, and beyond. In 2014, he was honoured as a Cultural Ambassador by King Jose Mendes of Sao Paolo, Brazil, and he continues to foster a vibrant connection between West Africa and the Diaspora. He has been instrumental in repositioning Nigeria and Africa as centres of authentic, exportable cultural excellence—not just in artefacts and festivals, but in philosophy, education, and intangible heritage.

His work has been profiled in cultural policy roundtables at the UNESCO headquarters, featured in exhibitions at global tourism expos, and taught in cultural diplomacy curricula from Nairobi to New York. Through programs that merge performance, education, and heritage conservation, he has become a silent yet powerful force in Nigeria’s soft power strategy.Beyond theatre and festivals, what has set Ambassador Duro-Ladipo apart is his belief in a knowledge system that transcends classrooms.

The “Authorship Education” model, cited in his honorary doctorate citation, reflects a system of experiential learning, skills-based interpretation of culture, and mentorship-led dissemination of indigenous knowledge. He has lectured at leading institutions across continents on this concept, advocating for the integration of storytelling, ritual performance, craftsmanship, and oral history into mainstream education—particularly as tools to strengthen identity, foster empathy, and empower youth. In his words, “Culture is not performance for tourists—it is the language of identity, the blueprint of value systems, and the archive of who we are.”This human-centered approach to education earned him not just the honorary doctorate, but also a growing global following that includes scholars, activists, and young cultural custodians.

Despite international accolades—including the Mama Yoruba USA Today Magazine Cultural Ambassador Award and the MBL UK Best Yoruba Cultural Ambassador Award—Ambassador Duro-Ladipo remains deeply rooted in grassroots cultural work. He continues to support local festivals, mentor emerging leaders, and advocate for policies that protect intangible cultural heritage.

His recent initiatives include a cross-continental cultural exchange programme between West African countries and the Caribbean, aimed at re-energising the diaspora connection.Notably, in 2019 and 2021, he hosted the First Eye Concept Yoruba Cultural Heritage Awards at Chicago’s Logan Center, celebrating African contributions to world culture and honoring unsung heroes in the Diaspora.

His receipt of the honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Humanities is the latest in a long line of recognitions, but perhaps one of the most meaningful, as it reflects not only a career of global advocacy but a life lived in the service of cultural truth. In an era where global tourism is shifting toward meaning, authenticity, and cultural sustainability, Ambassador Wole Akanni Duro-Ladipo’s work has become increasingly relevant.

His life is a living testament to the power of heritage as both a personal compass and a global connector.Asked what the future holds, the ever-passionate Duro-Ladipo said: “The world is thirsty for authenticity. My mission is to ensure that African voices—our elders, our artists, our traditions—are not lost in translation, but heard in symphonies of truth and pride.”Despite his international acclaim, Ambassador Duro-Ladipo remains deeply committed to local impact.

He is a mentor to emerging cultural leaders, a consultant to heritage preservation projects, and a regular presence at grassroots festivals from Ibadan to Ife. His ethos is one of service—of using visibility not for self-celebration but to amplify forgotten voices and sustain cultural ecosystems at risk of extinction.

As nations navigate the complexities of identity, unity, and development, voices like his remind us that cultural preservation is not a nostalgic exercise—it is a strategic imperative for a more empathetic and interconnected world. The honorary doctorate is a testament to Ambassador Duro-Ladipo's profound impact on international cultural understanding and his relentless efforts to bridge divides through the celebration of shared heritage. His work continues to inspire and foster goodwill across borders, solidifying his legacy as a true global cultural ambassador.
