When you slow down to read a book like John's book of revelation, it is fairly obvious John is talking to an audience that was well versed in the Genesis through Malachi text. This is because the apostles had patiently taught the Genesis through Malachi text to them extensively. Genesis through Malachi would be the bible they held as they read John’s book of Revelation.
Without a doubt, John saw a vision. However, John's genius and spiritual maturity is in how he told the vision!
It does not take much spiritual maturity to see a vision.
However, it takes decades of spiritual training and developing great attention to detail to speak scripturally from a vision!
John used the prophetic text (the scriptures i.e. the Genesis through Malachi text) that had been written before he was born to explain the lessons contained in the vision that he saw.
If you are not a student of the writings of the prophets, much of John's writing in the book of Revelation will be hopelessly confusing.
We do a poor job of explaining the text of the book of revelation today because we have largely abandoned the rigorous study of the writings of the prophets.
