Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, a controversial cross-dresser, has been released from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre after serving a six-month sentence for abusing the naira by spraying it at parties.

Earth’s Magnetic Shield Twisted Out of Shape by Colossal Solar Burst


Our sun is a dynamic star, constantly bombarding our planet with charged particles that cause aurorae and geomagnetic storms. Now, a team of researchers has found that an energetic outburst by our star disrupted our planet’s magnetic field for two hours in 2023.

The event occurred on April 24, 2023, when a coronal mass ejection (CME)—a burst of solar radiation from the sun—swept over our planet. CMEs are generally faster than the Alfvén speed, or the speed of magnetic field lines through plasma.

Last year, in late April, NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission observed an Alfvén speed faster than the CME heading towards our planet. During this event, the mission detected electron and ion energy fluxes, as well as changes in electron density. As the solar event passed through, the CME caused the Earth's bow shock to disappear for two hours, from approximately 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. ET. The team's analysis of this surprising solar event was published last week in Geophysical Research Letters.

“The terrestrial bow shock disappears, leaving the magnetosphere exposed directly to the cold CME plasma and the strong magnetic field from the Sun’s corona,” the study authors wrote in the paper. “Our results show that the magnetosphere transforms from its typical windsock-like configuration to having wings that magnetically connect our planet to the Sun.”

These structures, called Alfvén wings, act as a highway transporting plasma between the Sun and Earth's magnetosphere, according to an American Geophysical Union release. The team noted that Alfvén wing aurorae could occur on Earth and could be observed in future studies.

“The wings are highways for Earth’s plasma to be lost to the Sun, and for the plasma from the footpoints of the Sun’s erupted flux rope to access Earth’s ionosphere,” the team added. “Our work indicates highly dynamic generation and interaction of the wing filaments, shedding new light on how sub-Alfvénic plasma wind may impact astrophysical bodies in our solar and other stellar systems.”
CMEs should not be confused with solar flares, which are brilliant events that can cause geomagnetic storms on Earth. Both solar flares and CMEs are caused by realignments of the sun’s magnetic fields, resulting in the release of energy into space. Solar flares are bright flashes on the sun’s surface, while CMEs launch magnetized particles into space, sometimes in Earth’s direction.

The team also noted that the “Sun-Earth connection through Alfvén wings is analogous to the Jupiter-Ganymede connection,” suggesting that aurorae on Jupiter’s moon Ganymede may be created by similar Alfvén wing pathways. Further observations could reveal how the sun’s powerful outbursts affect other celestial bodies in our cosmic neighborhood. But for now, everything seems to be back to normal for Earth’s magnetic field.

Arsenal make contact to sign Serie A striker?

Arsenal have reportedly entered the scene to sign Napoli striker Victor Osimhen in the current transfer window.

The Gunners have had a quiet summer thus far, and they have made just two signings David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori.

No More Protests In Northern Nigeria, Say Arewa Youth Groups



Some Arewa youth groups in Northern Nigeria have decided to ban all protests for the next year. They also expressed full support for President Bola Tinubu's administration. The decision was made after the events that took place on August 1, during the nationwide protests against economic hardship and hunger. According to a statement from the groups' spokesperson, Comrade Mustapha Alkali, the protests were taken over by criminals who caused chaos in Northern communities.

The groups strongly condemned the violence and criminal activities during the protests, saying they were unacceptable and a threat to society. Alkali expressed concern that the destruction was intended to harm the North and showed disrespect for its values and culture.

The groups stressed that the economic losses caused by the destructive actions cannot be sustained.

“We declare our support for President Bola Tinubu and his administration. We believe in his vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria, and we will work with him to achieve this goal.

“We urge all our members and supporters to remain calm and peaceful and to work towards building a better future for our region and our country.

“After careful assessment of the events that unfolded on August 1 during the protests against the Federal Government, we have resolved to place a ban on all forms of protests in Northern Nigeria for the next year.

“This decision was not taken lightly, but it has become necessary to protect the interests and well-being of our people. The events of August 1 was a clear indication that those behind the protests had ulterior motives that were detrimental to the North. The level of violence, arson, and criminal activities that took place during the protests were unprecedented and unacceptable.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the destruction of properties, the attack on innocent citizens, and the disruption of peace and order in our region. These actions are not only unhelpful but also threaten the very fabric of our society.

“The protests were characterized by the wanton destruction of public and private properties, looting, and maiming of innocent citizens. This is not what we expect from a peaceful protest.

“Furthermore, the protests were hijacked by criminal elements who used the opportunity to wreak havoc on our communities. We cannot fold our arms and watch as our region is being destroyed by those who do not have our interests at heart.

“The protests have also caused significant economic losses to our people, and we cannot afford to continue on this path. We urge our youth to be vigilant and not allow themselves to be used as tools for destruction.

“The actions of those behind the protests are a clear indication that they want to destroy the North. They have no regard for our values, our culture, and our way of life. We will not stand idly while our region is being destroyed. We will work with the security agencies to ensure that those who breach the peace are brought to justice.”

The Arewa youth groups also commended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, for their stance against violence and their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the North.

“Their leadership and vision are what our region needs at this critical time. They have shown that they are committed to the well-being of our people, and we urge them to continue on this path,” the statement read.

The groups noted that the the efforts of the ministers ensured that the protests did not get out of hand and prevented further destruction and loss of life. “We urge them to continue to work tirelessly to ensure that our region is safe and secure.”

The groups, however, warned troublemakers to stay away from the North and declared their support for President Tinubu and his administration.

Alkali said: “We will not tolerate any form of violence or destruction in our region. We will work with the security agencies to ensure that those who breach the peace are brought to justice. We will not allow our region to be destroyed by those who do not have our interests at heart.”

Manchester United fears grow over Yoro

Manchester United fear new signing Leny Yoro could be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines after being filmed wearing a protective boot on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Yoro sustained the injury in the first half of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal in Los Angeles and was captured yesterday at the UCLA training complex wearing the boot, walking on crutches and with heavy strapping around his left leg.

The 18-year-old joined United from Lille a fortnight ago for £52 million, and a serious injury would represent a major blow for United and manager Erik ten Hag, who had hoped the Frenchman would be the centrepiece of the club’s bid to improve on last season’s eighth-placed showing in the Premier League.

A 17-year-old has been charged with murder after a knife rampage in Southport that left three children dead and eight others injured.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged after three children were killed and eight were injured in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance workshop.

Armed police detained a teenager and seized a blade following the rampage which left mass casualties in Southport shortly before midday on Monday.

Bebe King, six, and Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, were pronounced dead shortly after the incident, while Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine, died from her injuries in hospital on Tuesday.

Eight other children suffered stab wounds and five of them are fighting for their lives in hospital in a critical condition, along with two dance class teachers who tried to defend their pupils.

One of the dance class teachers left fighting for her life was named locally as Leanne Lucas, 35, said to be a former school teacher.

Speaking at a late-night press conference on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Ursula Doyle said the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been charged with three counts of murder, ten counts of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article.

He will appear at Liverpool City Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.

Sarah Hammond, chief crown prosecutor for CPS Mersey-Cheshire, said: “We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has the right to a fair trial.

“It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.

“Our thoughts remain with the families of all of those affected by these harrowing events.”

Chief Constable Serena Kennedy, of Merseyside Police, said: “As the CPS have said, a 17-year old-boy from Banks has been charged with the murders of Bebe, Elsie Dot and Alice, 10 counts of attempted murder and possession of a bladed article following the tragic incident in Southport on Monday 29 July.

“The 17-year-old cannot be named for legal reasons as he’s under 18.

“He has been remanded in custody to appear (today), Thursday 1 August, at Liverpool Magistrates Court, Derby Square.

“Whilst these charges are a significant milestone within this investigation, this remains very much a live investigation and we continue to work with our partners from Lancashire police and counter-terrorism police in the North West.

“I would like to thank all the forces who have offered and supplied support to Merseyside Police during the last three days and I can confirm that we are being supported with investigative resources from across the northwest.”

Tributes flooded in for three schoolgirls following the incident as more than a thousand people gathered in the town on Tuesday night at a tearful vigil.

In a statement, Bebe King’s family said: “No words can describe the devastation that has hit our family as try to deal with the loss of our little girl Bebe.”

Bebe was described as a “joyful girl, whose kindness radiated through the entire Churchtown community” by the headteacher of her former school.

Jinnie Payne, of Churchtown Primary School, described pupil Alice Dasilva Aguiar as the “happiest of souls, a true ray of sunshine” as spoke the school’s grief.

Alice’s devastated family said in a statement: “Keep smiling and dancing like you love to do our Princess, like we said before to you, you’re always our princess and no one would change that. Love from Your Hero Daddy and Mummy.”

Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer laid flowers at the scene on Tuesday, telling onlookers he wanted to pay his respects to family members who are suffering “raw pain and grief” he cannot imagine.

He paid tribute to the first responders, saying: “They were professional. And it was important for me to come and say simple words: Thank you.”

In a message left with a wreath at the scene, he wrote: “To the victims, families, and people of Southport, our hearts are broken, there are no words for such a profound loss. The nation’s thoughts are with you.”
