WHEN YOU SEE ERRORS IN A CHURCH OR ASSEMBLY: A CALL TO SPIRITUAL MATURITY AND SERVICE
~~Apostle Chris Onofua
Have you ever walked into a church or assembly of believers and quickly discerned that something was wrong doctrinally, structurally, or behaviorally? Perhaps you saw flaws in leadership, immaturity among members, or spiritual imbalance in practices or teaching?
You’re not alone. And you’re not necessarily wrong.
But what matters most is how you respond to what you see. One of the marks of true spiritual maturity is not just the ability to discern error, but the wisdom and meekness to serve redemptively in the midst of it.
“Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.” Galatians 6:1
1. DISCERNMENT IS NOT AN INVITATION TO CRITICIZE IT’S A CALL TO SERVE
When God opens your eyes to see what others may not, it's not a license to condemn. It's a responsibility to cover, to help, to build, and to restore.
“We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves.” Romans 15:1
You are not called to be a spiritual inspector, faultfinder, or accuser. That is Satan’s ministry.
You are called to be a builder, a restorer, and a servant of the grace of God.
“Let all things be done unto edifying.” 1 Corinthians 14:26
2. BE QUIET. BE PATIENT. BE LED BY THE SPIRIT.
Don't rush to speak. Don’t allow zeal without wisdom to lead you. Bring your maturity, your deposit, and your experience to that house quietly. Let your conduct be a sermon. Let your presence be redemptive.
“Study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands…” 1 Thessalonians 4:11
“He that hath knowledge spareth his words; and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.” Proverbs 17:27
When you see a fault in a house, pray. When you perceive a doctrinal imbalance, intercede. When you sense a character flaw, model Christ. Then, in the right time and through the right channels, God will use your presence to shift the atmosphere and bring order.
3. DON’T DESTROY YOUR FATHER’S HOUSE
Even when Jesus saw corruption in the temple, He didn’t burn it down. He purified it.
“The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up…” John 2:17
The church imperfect as it may be is still God’s house, and many times, your assignment is to be part of its healing.
“Every wise woman buildeth her house: but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.” Proverbs 14:1
4. BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TALK TO
When you’re burdened by the weaknesses you see, don’t vent carelessly. There are people who are planted in assemblies not to build, but to gossip, divide, and slander the work of God.
“Mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” Romans 16:17
Be wise. Protect your heart. Don’t become a tool in the hand of those who seek to pull down what they did not build.
5. YOU WERE SENT TO BUILD, NOT TO BREAK
God brought you there for a reason. Your discernment is not just a spiritual gift it’s a call to responsibility. You are not better you are sent. Your presence must be part of the healing process, not the hurt.
“And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations…” Isaiah 58:12
“And the Lord shall guide thee continually… and thou shalt be like a watered garden.” Isaiah 58:11
CAREFULLNESS:
-Don’t criticize what you were sent to heal.
-Don’t abandon what you were sent to strengthen.
-Don’t despise the people you were sent to love.
-Let your maturity speak louder than your emotions.
-Let your humility pave the way for your influence.
-Let your discernment lead you into service, not slander.
This is your Father’s house. Build it.
