Here's my view on the Christian tattoo debate. It would take approximately 3 to 4 minutes to read., but you'd learn one or two things.
ON TATTOOS, CHRISTIAN LIBERTY, AND THE RESPONSIBILITY OF CHURCH LEADERS
As a Christian music minister, I have come to understand that those of us who serve in gospel music share in the pastoral ministry of church leaders. We are shepherds too, guiding God's people not only through song but through the example of our lives. It is from this perspective that I wish to address the ongoing conversation about tattoos and Christian liberty.
Let me begin by clarifying the biblical position: getting a tattoo is not inherently sinful. The primary scripture cited against tattoos (Leviticus 19:28) must be understood in its proper context. This verse addresses pagan practices where people would cut themselves and make marks as acts of worship to other gods. This was about idolatry, not about the modern practice of tattooing as we know it today. Furthermore, this is Levitical law, which Christians are not bound by. If we were to enforce this particular law, we would also need to enforce the verse immediately preceding it, which forbids trimming one's hair or beard.
The other common argument (that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit) comes from 1 Corinthians 6, where Paul is specifically addressing sexual immorality, not tattoos. Nowhere in Scripture does God explicitly condemn the act of getting a tattoo in and of itself.
However, context and intent matter greatly. A tattoo becomes problematic when it does not glorify God, either through what it says, what it symbolizes, or where it is placed on the body. Tattoos bearing profane or immoral imagery, those that glorify worldly vanity or self-idolatry, or those placed on private areas of the body (such as the breast or other intimate parts) fail to honor God and should be avoided by believers.
The Principle of Christian Liberty
In Christian theology, there exists a concept known as "Christian liberty" or *adiaphora*, matters that are indifferent or morally neutral. These are actions that are not explicitly forbidden by Scripture but are often discouraged to protect our spiritual health, maintain a clear conscience, or prevent causing others to stumble in their faith.
Consider gambling as an example. The Bible does not explicitly forbid gambling, yet it is widely discouraged among Christians because it encourages greed, promotes the mismanagement of resources God has entrusted to us, and can lead to destructive addiction. Similarly, while tattoos may not be sinful in themselves, wisdom calls us to exercise discernment in how we apply our Christian liberty.
The Higher Calling of Church Leaders
This brings me to my central concern: the responsibility of Christian leaders. Pastors, ministers, and those who serve publicly in the church are beacons of upright living and righteousness for many. We are called to a higher standard, not because we are better than others, but because our lives are constantly observed, and our choices influence the spiritual journeys of those we lead.
Even secular institutions recognize this principle. Traditional banks and respected corporate organizations maintain strict policies against visible body tattoos, not because of religious convictions, but because of principles of decency, professionalism, and moral etiquette. If the world understands that certain appearances affect credibility and influence, how much more should we, as Christian leaders, be mindful of how our choices impact the faith of others?
There is an old saying: "Dress the way you would want to be addressed." Our appearance communicates something to the world and to the church. For Christian leaders to embrace visible tattoos (regardless of their spiritual intent) is to inculcate a lifestyle that, while not inherently sinful, can stir up unnecessary controversy and scandalize well-meaning believers.
Who Decides the Boundaries?
This raises an important question for those who advocate for complete freedom in this matter: whose role or responsibility would it be to determine how much tattoo is too much? What parts of the body are forbidden? Where do we draw the line? If a pastor has the liberty to cover his arms in tattoos, does he also have the liberty to tattoo his neck, his face, his hands? And if not, who makes that determination, and on what basis?
Without clear biblical directives, we are left to navigate these questions with wisdom, discernment, and a deep sensitivity to the consciences of others. This is precisely why Christian liberty must be exercised with great care, especially by those in leadership.
Conclusion: Leading with Wisdom and Love
My position is this: while getting a tattoo is not a sin by itself, Christian leaders must weigh their liberty against their responsibility. We must ask ourselves not only "Is this permissible?" but also "Is this edifying? Does this build up the body of Christ? Does this protect the consciences of weaker believers?"
Paul reminds us in Romans 14:23 that "whatever is not of faith is sin." If you feel convicted by the Holy Spirit not to get a tattoo, honor that conviction. If you do not feel convicted and wish to get one, ensure it is done in faith, that it glorifies God, and that it does not become a stumbling block to others.
But if you are a leader in the church (a pastor, a minister, a gospel musician) I urge you to exercise even greater caution. Avoid practices that, though not inherently sinful, may scandalize the faithful or diminish your witness, unless avoiding them would itself be a sin.
Let us lead with wisdom, love, and a deep reverence for the consciences of those God has entrusted to our care.
