Men must become true role models to fulfil their role as guardians (qawwam) of women.

While men possess certain physical strengths, as seen in sports where segregation exists, this does not diminish their greater responsibility to lead with righteousness and care.

Rights of Women and Conditions of Polygamy

If men truly knew the rights they must grant women, many would choose to remain bachelors due to the great responsibilities involved.

Huzoor (aba) shared how a Japanese friend once asked about polygamy. Polygamy is permitted only under strict conditions, which must be fulfilled responsibly.

A man cannot marry another woman merely for desire or convenience; there must be a valid reason.
Furthermore, if at the time of nikkah it is stipulated that the wife does not consent to her husband marrying another, then the husband must honour this condition.

Justice and Kindness in Marriage

Huzoor (aba) reminded men that they must treat their wives with goodness and fairness. Islam emphasises justice and compassion in all relationships—especially within marriage. Women, too, should remember that if their husbands commit any injustice, they should know that such behaviour is not in accordance with Islamic teachings. Patience, wisdom, and adherence to Islamic principles should be maintained in the face of any such challenges.

Husbands Must Show Compassion and Friendship

Huzoor (aba) stated that it is completely wrong to treat women as inferior. Some people deal with their wives harshly, which is against the teachings of Islam. A husband should treat his wife like a loving friend. The relationship between husband and wife should be based on love and mutual respect.

If a man does not fulfil the rights of his wife and treat her with compassion, how can he hope to attain closeness to Allah?

Safeguarding Morals in Modern Times

Huzoor (aba) noted that just as women face injustices, some men also experience mistreatment from their wives. However, this does not justify wrong behaviour in return. Both men and women must act with wisdom, righteousness, and patience.

Every woman and girl must safeguard herself from the moral disorders of today’s society. The Promised Messiah (as) stated that no other faith has preserved the rights of women as Islam has.

Polygamy in Islam – A Just Perspective

Huzoor (aba) addressed a common allegation raised by opponents of Islam regarding polygamy. He explained that this criticism is unjust. Islam did not introduce polygamy, but rather placed conditions and limitations on an already widespread practice.

The permission granted in Islam is under specific circumstances, such as the welfare of orphans and justice between wives. It is not an open licence but a conditional and regulated matter grounded in fairness and responsibility.

Treat Women with Kindness and Honour

Huzoor (aba) reminded that women’s rights have been preserved by Allah Himself. Islam commands kindness and gentleness in all dealings, especially within the home. Husbands are instructed to treat their wives with love, honour, and care. The Holy Prophet (sa) said, “The best among you are those who are best to their wives.” Therefore, each man must strive to be among the best by upholding justice and compassion towards his spouse.

Consort with Them in Kindness

Allah the Almighty states in the Holy Qur’an: “And consort with them in kindness.” (4:20)

This divine commandment instructs us to treat our wives with compassion, understanding, and respect. Islam places immense value on the honour and dignity of women. Husbands are reminded that true faith is reflected in the way they uphold kindness in their marriages.
