Introduction: Why You Must Grow Yourself
Life will not wait for you to become ready. It will not slow down because you are still trying to find your rhythm. In this world that demands more than it teaches, especially in our part of the world, self-mentorship is not a luxury. It is a necessity.
You are the first coach you will ever have. You are also the only one who will stay with you through every win, every fall, and every decision. Understand this truth early. You will not rise by accident.
Even if by some twist of fate, you find yourself at the top, without preparation, discipline, and internal structure, you will fall. What you did not build, you cannot sustain.
Yes, someone can make you a millionaire. But if you lack the character, wisdom, and discipline to manage it, you will fall back to zero. We see it every day. Gifted people whose talent opened doors, but whose lack of personal growth shut those doors again. That is why they say talent alone is not enough.
You need to be self-driven, a little street-smart, and very intentional about your growth. Here is the truth. You already have what it takes to grow yourself. Even professional athletes, no matter how fast or strong, need a coach. But no coach can run your race for you. No trainer can step into the ring and take punches on your behalf.
In this life, we are all boxers. Your coach can show you the way, but you must fight your own fight. God will not do everything for you. He gave you strength, wisdom, and tools. Now you must build.
If you taught yourself to walk as a baby through falls and bruises, what makes you think you cannot grow again?
Jesus taught His disciples how to pray. But after He left, they continued, trained themselves, and fulfilled their assignment. Nobody is using your mouth to talk for you. So do not let anyone use their life to live for you.
Stop hiding behind excuses like, “I am an introvert. I am more of a quiet person.”
“I am not super comfortable speaking in front of a crowd yet.” Growth is not about personality. It is about responsibility. Do not wait for someone else to fix it. Find that weak area, confront it, and train yourself in it. That is self-mentorship.
Limitation begins with you. If you convince yourself, you cannot do something just because nothing seems to be working, then so be it. But hear this. The universe is not designed to be friendly to anyone. You must believe in yourself and keep moving.
I vividly recall when Martins Sorinola, author of Your Mind: Your Greatest Asset, purchased a copy of my first book, Now That We Are 40. After completing the payment, he mentioned that he was also an author and wanted to gift me something in return. A few days later, he sent me two of his books.
One of them, Your Mind: Your Greatest Asset, became more than just a gift. It was the spark I needed to complete this very book you are reading.
There is a line from his writing that has stayed with me ever since: A mango tree does not need another mango to grow; all it needs is for the seed to be planted.
That statement struck me deeply. Think about it. When you plant a yam, you might support it with a wooden stick, so it grows upright. But after a while, the yam no longer needs the stick. It finds its own strength and continues to grow on its own.
That is how growth works in life. Support and encouragement may help you start, but no one else can do the growing for you. At some point, you must rise above the support system and depend on your own inner strength. The seed of greatness is already inside you.
Once it is planted, it does not need another version of you to grow. What it needs is for you to nurture it, believe in it, and allow it to break through the soil of doubt.
Life is like that. At first, you may need support, encouragement, or guidance. But you do not need anyone’s validation forever. You already carry the seed within you, your mind. Like the mango tree, you have what it takes to grow, thrive, and fulfill destiny. You may start like a yam needing support to stand, but eventually, you must rise and stand strong on your own.
Your growth is already inside you. All you need is the courage to believe it, plant it, and nurture it. This book is not against learning from others. Mentors are valuable. I have had mine too. But after mentorship ends, you are still the one who must sit with yourself, apply the lessons, and grow.
No one can live your life for you. Self-mentorship is not about walking through life alone or getting everything right the first time. Even in driving school, there comes a moment when you must hold the steering wheel yourself. Likewise, only you can carry out the unique assignment God placed inside you.
Look at David, a shepherd boy with no title, no spotlight, and no audience. Yet he was developing his skills in the field. He fought lions and bears, not because someone trained him, but because he refused to lose any sheep under his watch. He did not know he was being prepared for a throne. But that is how self-mentorship works. You prepare quietly for opportunities you cannot even see yet.
This book is your wake-up call. You are the best teacher you will ever meet if only you allow yourself to learn. The mirror is in front of you now. No more waiting. No more blaming. It is time to grow yourself from the inside out.
