A few months ago, I was going through one of my algorithm textbooks and came across fuzzy matching algorithms and the Levenshtein Distance algorithm.

Fuzzy matching algorithms handle small mistakes or suggest corrections for queries, while the Levenshtein Distance algorithm counts how many single-character edits (like adding, removing, or changing letters) are needed to turn one word into another.

Yesterday, while editing my article titled "How to Design Autocomplete for Search Engines", I decided to talk about these two algorithms since they are key parts of how autocomplete works. I got so into it that I forgot I was human! I took notes, wrote pseudocode, looked up some math textbooks to refresh my understanding of Probability, Statistics, and Combinatorics, and then started coding in Java.

As a software engineer, knowing math has made solving algorithm problems a lot easier for me, like fuzzy matching, Levenshtein Distance, and root-finding algorithms. I’m excited to write more articles on different algorithms with the help of math.
