BAYELSA SENATOR AGADAGA DEFECTS TO APC, SAYS PDP IN SHREDS

Benso Agadaga, a Senator representing Bayelsa East, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Agadaga announced his defection in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during the plenary on Wednesday. The letter was titled “Notice of resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party and formal movement and defection to the All Progressives Congress.”

“As the saying goes, change is the only permanent thing in life,” the senator wrote in his letter. “Indeed, as the Holy Scriptures remind us, to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heavens. I believe that the time for change in my political sojourn on earth has come.”

He stated that the decision to leave the PDP was not taken lightly, noting that his political career had flourished under the party’s platform. “This tough decision was made even after my appointment as permanent secretary,” he said. “And this was at a time when permanent secretaries were, even though not so permanent, but were very prominent.”

Agadaga recalled his tenure as executive chairman of the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board during the administration of former Governor Goodluck Jonathan. He also noted that he served as a special adviser under Seriake Dickson, another former governor of Bayelsa State, and under chief of staff Duoye Diri, the incumbent governor.

“I wish to express my profound gratitude to God Almighty and to my supporters in the then Peoples Democratic Party for the opportunity given to me to serve in those capacities,” he said. “The fact that I stand today as a distinguished senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is due to the benevolence of the then Peoples Democratic Party when it was intact and the goodwill of numerous well-wishers.”

He said internal issues within the PDP influenced his decision to leave. “However, it is both astonishing and deeply disturbing that the once proud and largest political party in Africa has been turned into shreds due to internal wranglings and irreconcilable differences at both the state and national levels,” he added.

“Taking cognisance of these unhealthy political developments within the Peoples Democratic Party as it is today, and after wide-ranging consultations, I have finally arrived at the inevitable conclusion and reasoning that progressivism, thinking progressive, beginning progressive, and acting progressively is the only way to renew the hope of all Nigerians in Nigeria.

“I am therefore constrained to formally declare my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party and hereby announce my defection to the All Progressives Congress, which will take effect from today, the 29th of October, 2025.”

FIRS collects N22.59trn taxes in nine months, N47.39trn in two years

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has recorded significant revenue gains, collecting N22.59 trillion in taxes between January and September 2025, and achieving a record N47.39 trillion in the 12 months spanning October 2023 to September 2025, exceeding its targets by 115 per cent, FIRS Chairman Dr Zacch Adedeji has announced.

Speaking on the agency’s performance, Adedeji said 2025 has been a year of transformation, with non-oil revenue accounting for 76 per cent of total collections, reflecting the success of diversification and reform initiatives.

“Non-oil taxes stood at N17.3 trillion, representing 128 per cent of the nine-month target and 76 per cent of total collection, while oil tax revenue reached N5.29 trillion, 98 per cent of target,” he noted. Non-import VAT exceeded targets at 137 per cent, and import VAT achieved 131 per cent.

Adedeji assured that the FIRS would continue to implement new tax laws fairly, enhance digitalisation of tax processes, train and retrain staff, and strengthen partnerships with stakeholders to meet and surpass government revenue expectations.

Highlighting reforms under his leadership, Adedeji said the FIRS’ planned transformation into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), effective January 1, 2026, will broaden the agency’s mandate to include non-tax revenue collection from the Nigeria Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The chairman emphasised several strategic initiatives that have modernised tax administration, including the National Single Window Project to streamline trade and tax processes, and the e-invoicing system to enhance transparency, accuracy, and digital integration in tax collection.

“A major highlight of 2025 was the passage of key tax reform laws aimed at simplifying compliance, closing administrative gaps, and aligning Nigeria’s tax system with international best practices,” Adedeji said.

On technology-driven initiatives, he highlighted the *829 # USSD Code launched in October 2024, which allows taxpayers to access services including retrieving Taxpayer Identification Numbers (TIN), verifying tax clearance certificates, checking tax types and rates, locating offices, and making enquiries — directly via mobile phones.

Adedeji also outlined efforts to improve taxpayer education and compliance, including nationwide tax clinics targeting small businesses, start-ups, and informal sector operators, providing guidance on filing and dispute resolution.

On the international front, FIRS advanced Nigeria’s global tax cooperation by concluding five mutual agreement processes with Belgium, France, and the Netherlands, partnering with the Swedish Revenue Agency on tax administration training, and negotiating or renegotiating treaties with countries including Hong Kong, Botswana, Tanzania, Rwanda, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Morocco, India, and Jersey.

“FIRS has in 2025 continued its transformation into a modern, technology-driven, and service-oriented institution, achieving major legislative, operational, and technological milestones that position it for sustained growth and greater efficiency,” Adedeji said.

He reaffirmed the service’s commitment to simplifying tax, maximising revenue, and supporting national development through transparency, innovation, and collaboration with stakeholders.

JAMB grants admission to 85 underage but exceptional candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has approved the admission of 85 candidates who were under 16 years old by September 2025.

The board, in a statement on Monday, said the admissions followed a rigorous screening process for “exceptional” candidates.

The candidates have been notified and instructed to proceed to their respective institutions to complete the admission process and print their JAMB admission letters.

Fabian Benjamin, spokesperson for JAMB, said the policy is consistent with global best practices, where such cases are treated as rare exceptions rather than the norm.

Out of the 2,031,133 applicants for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), a total of 41,027 candidates sought consideration under this special category.
