The Federal Government (FG) has warned vendors against selling force-repined fruits, threatening that the culprits would be dealt with decisively.

Executive Vice‑Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Mr. Olatunji Bello, gave the warning on Tuesday in Gombe State during a one-day sensitisation programme on the dangers of forced repining of fruits, adulterated palm oil, contaminated meat and grains.

The FCCPC chief, represented by Director of Quality Assurance and Development Dr. Nkechi Mba, said such types of fruits pose a threat to public health, adding that the commission would enforce strict compliance with food‑safety standards, collaborate with NAFDAC, SON, and other regulators, and prosecute offenders.

He also warned sellers of adulterated palm oil and contaminated meat and grains, urging farmers, processors, vendors and traders to shun harmful chemicals, maintain hygiene, label products correctly and respect consumer rights.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has accused the Presidency of distorting facts and misrepresenting its stance on the ongoing killings of Christians across the country, stressing that the situation in parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt constitutes a “Christian genocide.”

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN refuted claims that it ever dismissed or referred to the killings as a “so-called Christian genocide,” as alleged in a press release reportedly issued by Barrister Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Policy Communication.

According to the statement, the controversy stemmed from Bwala’s visit to the CAN Secretariat at the National Christian Centre, Abuja, on Monday, where he sought clarification on CAN’s view regarding remarks by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, who had described the continued killing of Christians in Nigeria as a “Christian genocide.”

“CAN made it clear that its position on this issue has long been established and remains unchanged. Across many parts of Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, Christian communities have suffered repeated, organised and brutal attacks which have left thousands dead, villages destroyed and families displaced. These are not isolated crimes but a continuing pattern of violence that has persisted for years without justice or closure,” the CAN President said.

CAN expressed dismay over the Presidency’s subsequent press release titled “Presidency Debunks Western Christian Genocide Narrative in Dialogue with CAN Leadership,” stating that it falsely portrayed Archbishop Okoh as having downplayed the killings by describing them as a “so-called Christian genocide.”

“That portrayal is completely false and grossly unfair. The meeting was recorded by CAN’s media team, and at no point did Archbishop Okoh use such words or express such a view. Referring to the tragedy as a ‘so-called genocide’ trivialises the pain of countless Christians who have lost loved ones, homes and places of worship in targeted attacks,” Archbishop Okoh said.

The Catholic bishop of Sokoto diocese, Matthew Kukah has accused the administration of former United States President Barrack Obama of being complicit in Nigeria’s fight against Boko Haram insurgency under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The cleric also urged the US government not to redesignate Nigeria as a country of particular concern (CPC).

Kukah spoke on Tuesday at the launch of the Aid to the Church in Need (ACIN) 2025 report on religious freedom in the world, held at the Augustinianum hall in Vatican City.

The CPC is a designation by the US government of any country that engages in “systematic, ongoing, egregious violations of religious freedom”.

Recently, US lawmakers have increasingly called on President Donald Trump to impose sanctions on Nigeria as a CPC owing to claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria.

Ted Cruz, a US senator, had proposed a bill that seeks to protect “persecuted” Christians in Nigeria.

However, the federal government has repeatedly denied the claim.

Nigeria was first designated a CPC in 2020, during the last year of Trump’s first term as president. However, the Joe Biden administration later reversed the move in 2021.

Kukah said the ongoing initiatives to address the challenges and the alleged “persecution of Christians” would be undermined if Nigeria is redesignated as a CPC.

The Catholic bishop said Nigerians “feel vulnerable and unprotected irrespective of their faiths, ethnicity or social classes”.
