My child understands Igbo
 but can’t speak it.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone.

Many Nigerian parents want their children to grow up connected to their language, but don’t know where to start.

It doesn’t have to be complicated.

One activity at a time.
One new word at a time.
One smile at a time.

This holiday, let learning Igbo become part of family time.

This style tends to perform better on Facebook because it begins with a relatable situation rather than immediately promoting a product.

Today’s class, we discussed feelings in Igbo language using illustrations and pictures.

After 40 minutes which is my standard teaching time, we started learning with my kearning materials.

Worksheets. Their mum was present to print them real time.

In my class, it’s either you are learning or you are learning .

So what I do is that I send the worksheet to print to the parents (if I am taking children) to print and keep,

for these children, they have a printer at home. So it was easy to just say, “mummy please print these..”

And it was so great!

I am so happy I stepped back to restrategise how to SIMPLIFY the Igbo language for everyone.

Does your child understand Igbo but rarely speaks it?

That is still progress. Understanding often develops before speaking.

Avoid pressuring the child or correcting every mistake. Instead, create small opportunities to respond in Igbo. Show a familiar picture, say the word and ask a simple question. Offer choices, pause patiently and encourage even one-word answers.

Repeat short phrases during meals, playtime and everyday routines. Praise every attempt and gradually build from single words to simple sentences.

The goal is to make speaking Igbo feel natural, safe and enjoyable.

Ề̀dĂ ume!!

Many children are introduced to Igbo through long lists of words that are difficult to remember.

Igbo language learning should be visual, practical and enjoyable.

This illustrated vowel resource connects each Igbo vowel to a familiar word and picture, helping children recognise the letter, practise its pronunciation and remember its meaning.

It is part of the growing collection of Igbo worksheets, printable flashcards, games and digital learning tools available through MyIgboWorld.

If we want children to preserve the Igbo language, we must provide attractive, practical and age-appropriate resources for them to learn with.

The printable Igbo Vowel Resource is available for parents, teachers and tutors. Send me a message to get your copy and explore other Igbo learning materials from MyIgboWorld:
