The Headies organisers have rejected claims that the awards sideline gospel artistes from major categories, saying faith-based musicians remain eligible to compete for mainstream honours.

The organisers responded to an open letter by Nigerian gospel artiste, Gaise Baba. He accused the awards of placing faith-based records in separate categories instead of recognising them among major honours. Gaise Baba also claimed that the Headies nominated him for the Inspirational Music category in 2024. However, he said the organisers did not publicly announce or present the winner on stage.

In a statement shared on its official Instagram handle, the Headies said its history does not support claims that gospel artistes face exclusion.

The organisers pointed to artistes such as Lara George, Kefee, Nikki Laoye and Timi Dakolo as examples of gospel musicians who have competed in mainstream categories.

The organisers also defended the Best Inspirational Single category, which they introduced at the 15th Headies in 2022. “Best Inspirational Single, introduced at the 15th Headies in 2022, was not created to put gospel music in a box. It was created to give more gospel and inspirational artists a guaranteed place on the Headies stage,” the statement reads in part.

Kcee and Okwesili Eze Group won the category in 2022 for ‘Cultural Praise’. Neon Adejo followed in 2023 with ‘Eze Ebube’, while Mercy Chinwo won in 2025 for ‘You Do This One’.

The Headies said failure to make the final nominees’ list does not amount to deliberate exclusion.

The Headies has expanded from about 22 categories in its earlier years to 35. As a result, the organisers said they cannot present every category during the live ceremony because of time limits. They now use a category rotation system.

“People excluded me from children’s parties because I had no child” - Adebimpe
Nollywood actress, Adebimpe Adedimeji has revealed that some people deliberately left her out of children’s parties, baby showers and naming ceremonies because she did not have a child at the time.

The actress shared the painful experience after attending the first birthday party of Rakeem Mkambala, the son of actress Priscilla Ojo and Tanzanian singer Juma Jux.

Bimpe said she became emotional after returning from the celebration because the event reminded her of a difficult period in her life. The actress said she was often left out of celebrations involving children, even when the people involved were close to her.

The actress urged people to show more compassion to women who are yet to have children.

Bimpe’s revelation comes months after she and her husband, actor Lateef Adedimeji, welcomed triplet boys after years of marriage. The couple announced the arrival of their three sons in May 2026.

The ever competitive radio landscape in the country is witnessing the emergence of a new media powerhouse with media executive Lady Doja Allen Lady Doja Allen expanding her broadcasting footprint beyond City 105.1 FM with the launch of 93.5 Area FM, a new radio station built around the energy, language and everyday experiences of Lagos.

The new station, rooted in the language, lifestyle and experiences of Lagos, marks another significant step in Lady Doja Allen’s journey from transforming a struggling radio station into a recognised Lagos media brand to building a broader broadcasting group.

Lady Doja Allen is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cardinal Broadcasting Limited, operators of City 105.1 FM. She took over the management of City FM at a difficult period and subsequently led a major restructuring of the station, including a rebranding and relaunch in 2012 taking the station from insolvency to profitability and eventually into the top tier of Lagos’ urban radio market.

Her story is particularly notable because she has occupied one of the most influential leadership positions in Nigerian commercial radio as a woman. Leading Ladies Africa described Lady Doja Allen as the first female CEO of a Nigerian radio station, highlighting her role in transforming City FM and creating opportunities for women and young media professionals.

Since taking charge of City FM, Lady Doja Allen has demonstrated that her ambition extends beyond simply running a successful radio station. Under her leadership, City FM has developed a strong urban lifestyle identity, while initiatives such as the City Media Academy have focused on developing the next generation of broadcasters, presenters, producers and media professionals.

The launch of 93.5 Area FM therefore represents a potentially important evolution of that strategy. Rather than simply creating another general-interest station, Area FM is carving out its own identity around the language, lifestyle and experiences of Lagos cutting across ethnic, social and economic boundaries and remains deeply embedded in everyday communication across Lagos and much of Nigeria.
