Troops kill two notorious kidnappers, rescue nine travellers

Two notorious kidnappers have been killed by troops of Operation Safe Haven who also rescued nine travellers at Beco Junction Heipang District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Benard Onyeuko said the soldiers recorded the feats in operations conducted alongside police operatives between Thursday and Saturday last week in a bid to sustain efforts at ensuring a hitch-free and peaceful Sallah celebration.

The two kidnappers who were killed after they tried to escape after being arrested, reportedly named one Mallam Buhari Umar as the leader of the gang.

Onyeuko said;
Notably on 7 and 8 July 2022, troops of Operation Safe Haven, in conjunction with Plateau State Police Command, arrested two notorious kidnappers, Abdulrazaq Umar and Idris Abdullahi, at Beco Junction Heipang District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State.

“Suspects confessed to have carried out several kidnapping activities within Plateau and Bauchi States, including the murder of Alhaji Saleh Abdulhamid (Shaba) at Ex-Land Village on 22 Jun 22.

“However, while enroute the criminals’ hideout, the suspects attempted to escape and were neutralised."

Troops also conducted a raid operation at Mailafia, Nisama, Dogon Filli and Gidan Waya – all in Jema’a Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State.
During the operation, he disclosed that troops arrested two suspected armed robbers identified as George Yakubu and George Joseph. Some of the items recovered from the suspects include three fabricated AK 47 riffles, a knife, a cutting hoe, a cutter, and a spanner.
He added;

“Also, on the same day, troops responded to a distress call that gunmen have attacked a Toyota Hummer bus with registration number ‘LFA 322 YR Nasarawa’ at Dogon Filli village in Jema’a LGA.

Man dies after drinking an entire bottle of 35% spirit in two minutes in bid to win £10 in South African liquor store challenge.

A man has died after drinking an entire bottle of spirit in just two minutes to win a £10 bet at a South African liquor store.

The local resident, who has not been named, visited the store in Mashamba village in Limpopo and took part in the challenge to see who could drink a bottle the fastest. He drank the whole bottle of the 35 per cent spirit before collapsing.

After falling to the ground, the man, aged between 25 and 30, was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The prize for the drinking competition was R200 in cash, the equivalent of around £10.
An inquest has now been opened into his death.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said: 'Police in Waterval outside Louis Trichardt have opened a case of inquest following an incident of apparent misuse of alcohol that took place at one of the local liquor outlets at Mashumba Village where the patrons allegedly participated in what they called a 'drinking competition.

'The winner who could consume the entire bottle of Jägermeister within a specified time, would get R200 cash.

'One of them immediately collapsed thereafter and was taken to the local clinic where he was certified dead.'
