WHO IS MOREMI?

Moremi Ajasoro.

Moremi was a wife to Oranmiyan. She lived in the 12th century. A tall exquisitely beautiful, intelligent & brave woman she was. During this time, the people of Ile-Ife were at war with the Ugbo people (today's Ilaje people in Ondo State). The people of Ife were being enslaved by the Ugbos & they were really terrified of them because they appeared as masquerades covered in raffia leaves. Moremi thought of a plan to liberate her people from this. She consulted the oracle of the River Esimirin to know the secret of the invaders. Moremi allowed herself to be captured in the next raid. She charmed the king of the Ugbos with her radiance & soon discovered their secret.

Moremi escaped back to Ife & prepared her people. When the Ugbos would attack, they were met with shock. The Ife people defeated & burnt most of them alive in their masquerades attires giving the Ife people a flawless victory, never to be disturbed by the Ugbos again. Oranmiyan accepted Moremi back into his life & kingdom. Moremi then visited the River Esimirin to appreciate the god. Esimirin demanded Moremi to sacrifice her only son Oluorogbo. Moremi pleaded with the god for a less terrible offering. In the end, she gave in & sacrificed him. The whole of Ife mourned with Moremi & promised to be her children, a pledge still being kept till date.

This statue of Moremi in the attached picture was erected by the current Ooni of Ife. It is depicted to show Moremi as she was during the war with the Ugbo people, holding a flaming torch with which she & others burnt the invaders.

The statue is the 4th tallest in Africa.
