Chapter 11: Black Card

Harry stepped out of the bank building with a black card in his hand. This was a card only those belonging in the top echelon of society had. He had accomplished what he came here for and so, it was time to move on to his next destination.

He rode his motorbike to the nearest supermarket and parked it in the parking lot. After which, he confidently strolled into the building. It took a few minutes for him to locate who he was looking for but he eventually found her. It was the cashier.

"Hello, I was wondering if it's possible for me to buy a lot of food items." Harry said to the fat lady with rosy cheeks sitting behind the counter.

"Yes, that's possible, if you have the means to pay for everything you buy." She replied after staring at him for a while.

"Um... When I say a lot, I mean ALL the food items in this supermarket."

"Are you planning to feed a whole town? You'd have to see the Manager if you plan on buying everything." The lady said. She took Harry to the Manager's office and left afterwards mumbling some words under her breath.

The manager was a middle aged man wearing a well tailored suit and glasses. He sat behind his table with a carefree smile on his face.

"Hello, how may I help you, young man?" He asked in a deep soothing voice.

"Can I sit?" Harry asked.
"Ah, where are my manners? Of course you can sit." He said, indicating for Harry to sit on the chair opposite him.

"I'd like to buy all the food stuff you have stuck from next week. About five times."

The Manager's brows furrowed, he stroked his beards while pondering for a while before responding.

"You mean you want to buy every single food item starting from next week and after we restock on them, you wish to buy everything again until after five times?"

"Yes, that's exactly what I mean." Harry said with a smile.

"That's a lot of money, young man. How am I sure you'll be able to afford all of it? I'm a busy man and I don't fancy wasting my time."

"How about I pay you um... A hundred million right now for the goods. I'm sure that would make you busy yourself on this matter. Is that okay?"

"Great! That's fine with me." The Manager replied.

Harry left the Manager's office after he transferred the money to him. He also gave him the location where the goods were to be sent. Now it was time for him to handle other matters.

He got on his motorbike again and rode away, back to the restaurant to pick up Charlotte.

Chapter 10: Spoiled brat

Harry woke up from his dream. It was a reminder of the day his Dad died. His eighteenth birthday was some weeks away when it had happened.

'The girl from my previous dream looks a lot like Kathy but she isn't Kathy.' Harry thought to himself and got up from his bed. The arrangement of the room was still the same, not a single thing changed. He went over to the reading table and pulled out the top drawer.

There, the book his Dad gifted him was staring back at him with no signs of it having been opened. Yes, Harry had not read the book.

"I'll come back for you later. Urgent needs first and I am so hungry." Harry said before closing back the drawer, leaving the room.

His sleep was rejuvenating and refreshing but it wasn't energizing. He had a few things to do today. One of which was to prepare for the probable end of the world. If the world was ending, what would you do?

Almost everyone had the impression that Harry was a spoiled brat. They attributed his good grades to the fact that the schools didn't want the son of one of the greatest scientists to look dumb or that Harry's Dad had paid them some money so his son could always have good grades. And Harry on the other hand didn't care. He didn't even bother to save his reputation but mostly went out of his way to aid their assumptions, which he would be doing today once more.

When Allan died, Harry told the bank manager of the bank his Dad's assets were kept, that the account should be frozen. He didn't want anything that would remind him of his Dad, which in turn would remind him of his death. This was also the reason he left the manor, and left South Clove to start up a new life for himself.

"Thank God I didn't give the money up for charity. I really was dumb back then. Haha!" Harry mocked himself as he rode his motorbike to a nearby restaurant.

Now, he was ready to fully play his role as a spoiled brat and spend those billions lavishly.

Harry got to the restaurant and ordered a hearty meal and sat while waiting for his meal to be prepared. Not long after, a waitress came carrying a good tray. Her hair was neatly packed up in a bun, highlighting her little ears and her pretty face.

"Thank you." Harry said and dug into his meal while she left and disappeared behind a door to prepare another order. The meal was really delicious to Harry. He was tempted to eat up every single last grain which he failed to resist. Suddenly, there was a commotion coming from behind the door the waitress went into. Soon after, an older lady came out grumbling and left with one of the cars packed outside the restaurant. She seemed to be the owner of the place.

When the waitress came out once more, she served the meal she brought and came over to clear Harry's table. She had a frown on her face and one part of it was red with finger marks on it.

Harry pondered for a while before he said. "I'm looking for a worker. Are you interested?" He asked.

"What kind of work?" She asked as she cleared up the table.

"I'm just looking for someone that can wash, clean and cook."

"It sounds like you're looking for a wife." She replied while glaring at Harry. He chuckled nervously and cleared his throat before speaking again.

"Not a wife. More like a retainer or house help."

"Okay. So how much are you willing to pay?" She asked.

"That's for you to choose. What's your name by the way?"

"...I'm Charlotte."

"Alright then. I'll pick you up at the end of your shift. Which is?" Harry asked.

"12pm. I didn't say I accept the offer, stop assuming things."

"Neither did you reject." Harry said with a smile and left the restaurant. Charlotte watched as he left with his motorbike to God knows where. She didn't want to admit it, but she was in desperate need of a job, a better job. The money she made from the restaurant was meager, excluding the abuse she got.

"That bike looks expensive. He wouldn't mind if I say 20,000 a month, right? That's if it's an actual job offer and not a ploy to get me out on a date with him.”

Chapter 9: Allan's Death

It was morning in South Clove. A ray of sunlight shone through the glass paned window of the Whyte Manor. The daylight carried a sweet freshness and the melodic chips of birds.

"Ugh..." Harry groaned and smiled afterwards. It felt good to be alive and well. Suddenly there was a knock on the door to his room.

"Come in." Harry said in a groggy voice.

A young man with hair as dark as obsidian, and a charming smile etched on his lips walked in with his hands behind his back.

"Good morning, Son. Hope your night was good?" Allan greeted and asked, inching his way to his sons' bed.

"Hey, good morning Dad. My night was refreshing. What brings you here so early?"

"Don't be silly. The sun is already out, it's 7:35 AM." Allan chuckled now sitting on the edge of the bed.

"Ohh..." Harry sat up and scratched the back of his head awkwardly.

"Well...I got something for you. Think of it as a pre-birthday gift." Allan said, grinning widely.

"Don't tell me you got me a ticket to watch a J J Thompson's documentary of atoms or a ticket to a zoo." Harry replied, giving his Dad a suspicious stare.

"Haha! What's wrong with watching a science documentary? Well, it's not either of the two. Here is what I got you." Allan said and took out a book that was behind his back.

Harry held the book with both hands, his eyes fixed on the title.

"Geometrics, really? Who gives their child a school book as a pre-birthday gift? Gosh!" Harry exclaimed.

"Haha! It's way better than what I got for my eighteenth birthday, kid." Allan replied and stood up to leave.

"What did you get from your parents?"

Allan suddenly looked a bit embarrassed as his cheeks flushed. "A pack of condoms." He replied in a hush tone.

Harry was rendered speechless as he stared at his Dad, looking for hints that he was lying, but found none.

"Ahem...do read the book though, it will help you. Perhaps one day you'd thank me for it. Kathy is done with preparing breakfast too." Allan said, sighed and left the room.

Harry got up from bed and took the book and placed it in the drawer of his reading table. Reading wasn't really his thing. He was naturally intelligent. Even though he didn't read for an exam, he could come out with at least a B minus if he had attended the classes.

After freshening up and putting on a set of clothes, he strolled downstairs to the living where he saw Kathy mopping the floors.

"Hey Kathy, where's Dad? I forgot to tell him I needed some cash." Harry asked.

"Mr Whyte left a while ago, Harry." Kathy said in a soft voice. Harry stared at her otherworldly beautiful face for a moment, he was about to speak when the telephone in the living room began to ring.

He rushed to it before Kathy could and picked the call.

"Hello, who's this?"

"Is this the telephone line of the Whyte Manor?" The voice on the other side of the line asked.

"Yes, it is. Any problem?" Harry asked.

"This is the head of the state police speaking... There was an explosion in Mr Whyte's Laboratory a few minutes ago and..."

"And what?!"

"...we found just the remains of his body. Most of it was destroyed by the explosion." The officer said.

It felt like the world had come to a pause for Harry. He could see Kathy staring at him with a worried look. How can his father be dead? He just spoke to him this morning.

The living room of the manor began to fade as Harry slowly woke up from his dream.

Chapter 8: Memories.

Harry stared at the closed double doors that led into his home with his luggages in hand. He shifted his gaze to his right where an old rocking chair stayed in place.

The image of a young man that looked to be in his late forties, yet having hair as dark as obsidian and a charming smile etched on his lips appeared. He was sitting on the chair, enjoying its back and forth motion without a care in the world.

As quickly as it appeared, so did it disappear.
"Memories..." Harry whispered softly under his breath while rubbing his eyes. He inserted a key into the key, after which it made a clicking sound. He went on to push the solid doors open. They were quite stiff, creaking and whining under pressure.

It was almost dusk but entering inside the manor made it feel like it was night time. The walls were very thick, looming as though they absorbed light. The first thing Harry did was to get the lights on. Everything inside was in working condition, just how he had left them.

"Phew! I need to rest for some time. I've been travelling for hours. But if I sleep, there'll be nothing to eat when I wake up. But I can't go out cause I'm tired....Ugh. This is really annoying."

Harry angrily moved into the living room of the manor. It was a wide square space, with furniture and gadgets and pictures of his Dad, his little self and...his Mom, all hanging across the wall. Everything his eyes saw was covered in so much dust and cobwebs. He had already noticed four big spiders at different sections of the room. They seemed to have mapped out their own territories with hundreds of cobwebs.

"Cleaning a place like this is going to be a lot of work. *Huff* First things first and that is to rest." Harry said and chuckled at his rhyme.

He took the elevator in the living room. It was way easier than the long spiralling staircase. It took him to the floor above, opening up to a hallway that led to different places in the manor. On the outside, the manor looked small but a person could get lost on the inside.

A long straight walk to the end of the hallway, and fork left. That was how Harry moved and opened the door to his childhood room. Just like everywhere else in the manor, it was covered in dust.

Harry dropped his luggages inside and went to the bed and rolled out all the sheets and laid on the foam. It didn't take long for him to fall asleep and his mind drifted into the dream world once again.

Chapter 7: Allan Whyte

The sound of a motorbike could be heard moving at a steady pace, and a young man seated on it with a helmet shielding his face as he cut through the wind.

At the back of the motorbike were the few luggages he gathered from his apartment.

'At this pace, it would take at least seven hours before I reach my destination.' Harry thought to himself, but the bike maintained its speed. He wasn't in a hurry to get home because he knew what awaited him there already.

Cobwebs and a lot of dust and maybe some rodents. Since his father's passing he hadn't gone there.

His Dad was a man of science and was very devoted to his study. He believed science holds the secret to the universe and went as far as he could to prove it, which eventually led to his death. It was really tragic. A man of science, killed by science.

According to what he was told, it was a chemical explosion at his Laboratory. His father had been working with very unstable chemicals which exploded, killing him on the spot and injuring the hundreds of people that had been in his company. They were Lucky his Dad loved working alone in his personal Lab, if not, their bodies would have been pulverised like his. Only God knows what he was trying to create out of those chemicals.

What had hurt Harry the most wasn't only the death of his father, but on the day of the funeral, he had hoped to see his mother but she wasn't there. It made Harry furious and devastated. The thought of suddenly being alone in the world hit him like a speeding truck.

Harry shook his head, a wistful expression taking form on his face as he sped the motorbike. Now he was moving at 10kmph and his acceleration seemed to be on a continuous rise.

A few hours passed when Harry crossed into a new environment. He had entered the South of Clove City and had slowed considerably. It didn't take long for him to reach a manor made from concrete, surrounded by a fence with a single entrance. The building was a magnificent one. Despite its grandeur, it was still an understatement of his Dad's status and popularity.

After all, who didn't know Dr Allan Whyte in the whole of Clove City and the regions beyond?

Harry paused looking at the black flowery gate in front of him. There was a time it felt so large and imposing. Now, it looked normal and small even.

Harry got off the bike and went to one of the pillars connected to the gate. After two years, no one had been able to break in to steal from the manor, and there was a reason for that.

Harry wiped his hand across the surface of a screen. It lit up with a blue light, there were no buttons to type anything, it didn't even tell you to insert a pin or password. So even if a person managed to get it to light up, they would be at a loss for what to do next.

"Systematic, Comprehensive Investigation and Exploration of Natural Causes and Effects." Harry suddenly said. The light from the screen turned to a bright green and then the gate creaked and slowly opened.

Harry chuckled as he went back to his motorbike. His Dad was indeed a man of science. He even made the password to his manor S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
