The festival is one of the most important celebrations in the Islamic calendar and typically takes place over two to three days. Here is a breakdown of what it means and how it is observed.

The term "Ileya" comes from the Yoruba word for "time to go home" or "going home," as this is a period when people travel back to their hometowns to reunite with extended family.

Religious Significance: It commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, before God provided a ram to be sacrificed instead.

Core Traditions: Muslims who can afford to do so perform the Qurbani (animal sacrifice), which usually involves slaughtering a ram. The meat is then divided into three equal parts to be shared among family, friends, and the less fortunate.

Festivities: The celebration begins with morning prayers at the Eid grounds, followed by feasting, wearing traditional attire, and exchanging visits with loved ones.
