A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has sentenced a 400-level student of the University of Port Harcourt, Damian Okoligwe, after finding him responsible for the death of his girlfriend, Justina Otuene.

Okoligwe, a Petrochemical Engineering student, was accused of causing the tragic incident involving Justina, a 300-level Biochemistry student, on October 20, 2023, at his residence in Mgbuoba, Obio-Akpor LGA.

Delivering the judgment on Friday, Justice Chinwe Nsirim-Nwosu stated that the evidence presented by the prosecution sufficiently established the key elements required in the case. The court thereafter issued its sentence in line with the law.

Speaking after the ruling, the state prosecutor, Charles Mbaba, expressed satisfaction, noting that the decision brings a sense of closure to the family of the late Justina and serves as a reminder that harmful actions carry serious legal consequences.

He added that the judgment reinforces the importance of lawful conduct and discourages young people from seeking shortcuts in life.

The deceased’s elder brother, Osatawaji Otuene, also appreciated the thoroughness of the judgment, saying it brings some relief and reassurance to the family.
