Territory taking, piece by piece.
with in case you missed these important stories on the latest music streaming companies setting up shop in Africa's #1 entertainment market, Nigeria.
Of late, I have been saying based on my observations, that I believe Africa's citizens, give or take 3 to 5 years, will be the ones primarily funding the rich and famous lifestyles of your favorite American celebrity, especially musicians.
That is why when I saw the latest financial reporting on 's Black is King (BIK) indicating that BIK's recent release has only reached 2.2% of the Disney Plus 60 million viewers, I said, "kini (what is the) big deal?"
Beyonce's distribution strategy was to broker deals with Disney Plus, Canal+ Afrique for Central and West Africa, South Africa's MultiChoice Group's Channel MNET for Sub-saharan Africa, and in the Middle East and North Africa secure distribution via Emirati Television's OSN. All of her combined Africa deals have overwhelmingly more reach than Disney, in the early release.
So what does it matter that a newcomer to the VOD streaming market doesn't get her the wide reach when Africa can?
It is important to note that for a while now, global entertainment revenues have been a major source of income for American creatives and institutions. As of March 2020, per an MPA report, global entertainment revenue surpassed 100 billion; but on the flip side what we saw was ticket sales for the U.S. market falling over 4%.
All of these make the deal-making for African creatives very interesting especially when it comes battling for exclusive control of the African market. Historically, African creatives carved out Africa as exclusively their own in a lot of their western entertainment deals. But, I won't be surprised if, for example, Beyonce secured the territorial rights for Africa in BIK from all African creatives given her distribution deals with the networks. I also expect to see this kind of pursuit for Africa by western conglomerates who can now say, "well am in Africa so African creative give it up."
Interesting times ahead. Your thoughts?
