*EUROPEAN COURT UPHOLDS RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IN UKRAINE*
*September 10, 2026*

On *July 9, 2026*, the European Court of Human Rights delivered a landmark ruling in the case of _Barsuk and Gyl v. Ukraine_. The decision confirms that sharing faith door-to-door is a protected form of religious expression. It also strengthens basic rights and freedoms for everyone in the 46 countries of the Council of Europe, no matter their beliefs.

*Background of the Case*
In *March 2016*, two senior women, *Tamara Barsuk* and *Vira Gyl*, were visiting homes in Chuhuiv, Ukraine to speak about the Bible.
A man approached them, identified them as Jehovah’s Witnesses, and violently assaulted them until they lost consciousness. He also tore up the religious literature they were carrying.

A neighbor stepped in and police detained the attacker. However, authorities did not recognize the attack as religiously motivated. After several delays, the case was dismissed in *March 2021*, and no one was held responsible.

After exhausting local legal options, the sisters took their case to the ECHR.

*The Court’s Decision*
The ECHR ruled that Ukraine failed to protect the sisters’ rights. The Court concluded there was:
1. *Degrading treatment* during and after the attack
2. *Discrimination based on religion*

*The Court ordered Ukraine to pay:*
- *€4,000 to each sister* ≈ $4,631 for physical and emotional harm
- Reimbursement for legal expenses

The judgment reinforces protections for religious activity across all Council of Europe member states.

*Statement from Tamara Barsuk*
More than 10 years later, Tamara says she holds no grudge against the attacker. After the ruling she shared:
_“I’m thankful for this decision. It protects my right to talk about my faith. I still love the ministry. When I visit homes today, I meet many sincere people who want to hear Bible-based good news.”_

This ruling is a positive step for religious freedom in Ukraine and beyond. It supports the right of people everywhere to share their beliefs peacefully. We also keep in mind the counsel to pray for those in authority, _“that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity”_ — 1 Timothy 2:2.

You might find it useful to review together articles on jw.org in the series “Young People Ask​—Creation or Evolution?” Then discuss the line of reasoning that your child feels is most persuasive for helping others understand the truth about the Creator. Encourage him to use simple logic and reasoning if some are open to a pleasant discussion. For example, a schoolmate might say: “I believe only what I can see, and I have never seen God.” A young Christian could respond: “Imagine that you are walking through a forest far from any human activity and you come upon a functioning well. What would you conclude? If the presence of a well gives clear evidence of intelligent life having made it, how much more so does the existence of the universe!
