EFCC PRESS STATEMENT

Why EFCC Froze Osun State's Government Account

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is compelled to publicly address issues pertaining to its preventive moves in freezing the bank account of the Osun State government, without prejudice to the imminent governorship election in the state.

The Commission has been busy investigating the Osun state government since March, 2026, regarding alleged fraudulent handling of Ecology Funds, Intervention Funds and Federal Account Allocation Committee, FAAC account to the tune of N11, 000,000, 000(Eleven Billion Naira only). To this end, some officials of the state government, especially the Accountant General of the State, have had interview sessions with investigators of the EFCC.

These ongoing investigations of the state government would not have warranted any placement of Post No Debit order on its account but for the precipitate and unwarranted movement of funds from the accounts to different suspicious accounts since August 2, 2026. The Commission noticed huge transfers of funds into different corporate entities and had to swiftly halt the trend by freezing the accounts from which such heavy funds are being moved.

The EFCC’s preventive mandate is a public-inclined framework of safeguarding public funds, assets and resources. The Commission cannot watch idly while a state government’s account is being pillaged. While the Commission is fully aware of the impending governorship election in Osun State, it has a responsibility to act in defence of the sanctity of the funds of the state. It will be uncharitable for the Commission to allow an excuse of an upcoming election to fold its arms to perform its legally-assigned functions.

It is equally needful to state that the Commission is keeping watch over the finances of other states like Osun State. Many of these states are on the investigative radar of the Commission to ensure accountability and probity. The Commission has always pointed out that it is non-partisan and non-sectarian but always working in the overall interests of Nigerians. The Osun State government account was frozen to save public funds from being looted.

The public is enjoined to ignore false narratives and deliberate demonization of the works of the EFCC. The interests of all Nigerians are greater and will always be protected by the Commission.

By law, the EFCC should have gone to court to obtain an order to freeze the allocation account of Osun State. Freezing without the order of court makes the action unlawful and regrettable. The sections of the two Acts cited in this letter, do not support the unilateral freezing of an account.

BUSTED AT SEA! Nigerian Navy Seizes Vessel With 650 Metric Tonnes of Suspected Stolen Crude Oil, Arrests 12 Crew Members🔥🔥👇

The Nigerian Navy has recorded another major breakthrough in its ongoing war against crude oil theft, intercepting and arresting a vessel allegedly involved in the illegal siphoning of crude oil in Nigerian waters.

The operation, conducted under Operation DELTA SENTINEL in the early hours of Thursday, July 23, 2026, followed credible intelligence generated through the Nigerian Navy’s surveillance systems and sustained monitoring of maritime activities.

Naval personnel swiftly intercepted the suspect vessel, MT FILIA, at the UTUE Terminal in Akwa Ibom State while it was allegedly siphoning stolen crude oil from an oil well terminal jacket.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the vessel was carrying approximately 650 metric tonnes of crude oil and 32.82 metric tonnes of fuel oil without the required documentation or lawful authorization. The vessel, its cargo, and all 12 crew members were immediately taken into custody for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Reacting to the successful operation, the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, praised the professionalism, vigilance, and dedication of the naval personnel involved. He reiterated that the Nigerian Navy remains committed to eliminating crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other maritime crimes that threaten Nigeria’s economy and national security.

According to the Navy, Operation DELTA SENTINEL continues to deliver significant results through intelligence-driven operations, persistent surveillance, and collaboration with other security agencies and key stakeholders across the maritime sector.

The latest arrest adds to a growing list of successes recorded by the Nigerian Navy. Between April and June 2026, the service recovered more than 4.7 million litres of petroleum products, dismantled 58 illegal refining sites, destroyed 239 dugout pits and 13 refining ovens, and arrested 91 suspects linked to crude oil theft.

These sustained operations have coincided with Nigeria’s rise in crude oil production to 1.89 million barrels per day in July 2026, exceeding the country’s OPEC production quota.

The Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to protecting critical oil and gas infrastructure, supporting increased crude oil production, and maintaining a secure maritime environment that promotes economic growth. It also urged members of the public to continue providing credible intelligence to help security agencies combat crude oil theft and other maritime crimes.

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO ANNOUNCE UPWARD SALARY REVIEW FOR ARMED FORCES PERSONNEL, SAYS DEFENCE MINISTER

ABUJA — The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), OFR, has disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will soon announce salary increase for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria as part of the Federal Government’s sustained commitment to improving troop welfare and rewarding their sacrifices to the nation.
General Musa made this disclosure on Monday in Abuja during a one-day training and financial empowerment workshop organized for widows and wives of service personnel where he re-emphasised the Ministry of Defence’s unwavering resolve to champion policies and strategic partnerships that prioritise the holistic well-being of Nigerian troops and their families.
Recalling previous welfare benchmarks, the Honourable Minister noted that military pay was successfully raised from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000 during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, adding that active steps are currently underway to secure an even better package for the troops. "I want to state here that a few weeks ago, I mentioned that soldiers are now receiving ₦100,000. When I was Chief of Defence Staff, soldiers were receiving ₦49,000. About two years ago, I pushed for an increase to ₦100,000, and that was achieved. We are, however, making further efforts to increase it again," General Musa stated. He further added that "I am confident that very soon, Mr. President will announce another salary increase for our men."
Speaking on the theme of the workshop, "Renewed Hope for Families of the Armed Forces of Nigeria Through Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development," the Minister highlighted that a formidable military relies not only on tactical equipment and trained personnel, but also on economically stable households.
While expressing deep appreciation to the families of service members, the Minister commended military spouses for sustaining troop morale on the frontline and honored the perseverance of widows whose husbands paid the ultimate price for the country.
"To the spouses gathered here today, your resilience, patience, and steadfast support give your loved ones the confidence to remain focused on their responsibilities," the Minister added. "To our widows whose husbands served Nigeria with honour, your strength and perseverance in the face of loss remain an enduring source of inspiration."

JUST IN: Nnamdi Kanu Sacks Longtime Lawyer, Withdraws Authority to Represent Him or IPOB

The jailed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has formally terminated the services of his longtime personal lawyer, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, and directed him to stop representing him, his family or the separatist group in any capacity.

In a letter dated July 22, 2026, written from the Sokoto Correctional Centre, Kanu said Ejiofor’s engagement as his personal legal representative had earlier been terminated verbally. The latest correspondence, he added, served as formal written confirmation of that decision.

Kanu also withdrew any authority previously granted to Ejiofor to act for or represent IPOB. He insisted the lawyer no longer held any express, implied or ostensible authority to speak or act on behalf of the group.

Citing Section II, Subsection A of the IPOB Code of Conduct, Kanu stated that the power to appoint, suspend or dismiss principal officers rests exclusively with the IPOB leader unless expressly delegated. According to him, no individual, committee or former office holder acting outside the provisions of the code can validly appoint or retain legal representatives for the organisation.

He maintained that any purported mandate or authority claimed by Ejiofor to represent IPOB was no longer recognised.

Kanu directed the lawyer to immediately cease making public statements, granting interviews, issuing press releases or publishing social media posts on behalf of him, his family or IPOB. He also instructed Ejiofor to stop presenting himself as his legal representative or that of IPOB in any court, forum or public space, and to take the necessary legal steps to withdraw from any pending matters where he remained counsel on record.

On the handling of privileged information, Kanu wrote: “Accordingly, I hereby place you on formal notice that you are not authorized to disclose, publish, communicate, exploit, or otherwise use any confidential or privileged information acquired in the course of your retainer, whether directly or indirectly, for any purpose whatsoever, except as required by law or by order of a court of competent jurisdiction, without my express written authorization from me.

“Any unauthorized disclosure or misuse of privileged information may constitute professional misconduct and may give rise to disciplinary proceedings before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, as well as any other remedies available under the law.”

Kanu cautioned that any breach of client confidentiality or unauthorised disclosure of privileged information could amount to professional misconduct and attract disciplinary proceedings before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC), in addition to other legal actions.
