NYSC Moment I’ll Never Forget in my life
It was 21 Day in the 2021/2022 NYSC orientation camp NYSC Orientation Camp Fanisau Dutse, Jigawa State. I had just been told to carry my luggage on my head and walk in through the camp gate🤣officially welcomed as a “Prospective Corps Member.” It felt more like a trial by fire than a welcome ceremony.
Morning came at 4:45am sharp. No excuses. The bugle sounded, we dressed in white‑and‑white, and stood under stars still fading into dawn. Morning devotion. Then Man‑O‑War drills. Military drills. Everything timed to the second. It was humbling and exhausting.
By Day Five, the uniform glare had set in. But so had new friendships & platoon mates who shared laughters, shivers, hopes. We cooked together, dug in at football and volleyball, danced under the night sky. Even the strict discipline of “lights out” became something strangely comforting.
Then one night, late past midnight, the fire alarm sounded. Panic. Many of us scrambled out of our rooms 😀some half‑naked, some stumbling in darkness—rushing to the parade ground as instructed. People laughed nervously, some got hûrt, but when the truth set in,it was a drill and it felt revealing. We saw ourselves in raw lines: vulnerable, curious, growing.
When finally we were sworn in, Prospective Corps Members became Corps Members. The weight of pride hit. The uniforms no longer felt foreign. The rhythm of camp wake‑up, drill, skill acquisition, prayer—had become ours. And the scramble for posting… when I read “Girls’ Secondary School Birniwa in Birniwa local government on my PPA letter, my heart leapt.
At PPA, suddenly I was Teacher 🤣 a roles I never dreamed. I stood before students, planning lessons, catering for school events, representing NYSC not just in uniform but in action. Every challenge uncertain rooms, limited resources became fuel to show what we can do.
By the end of the year, I wasn’t the same. I’d learned discipline. I’d seen unity in diversity. I’d tasted fear and joy. And I’d come out stronger. NYSC 2021/22 batch B stream 2 wasn’t just a service year but t was a journey of becoming.
