According to reports, a young man was accused of stealing a phone and was allegedly beaten to de@th in Jos.
It was later reported that the phone was found, suggesting that he may have been innocent.
If these reports are accurate, this is heartbreaking.
In Nigeria, no one has the right to take another person's life based on an allegation. Our laws do not permit jungle justice.
Section 36(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), provides that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. Likewise, Section 33 guarantees every person's right to life, except in the limited circumstances permitted by law.
Whether a person is accused of stealing a phone or committing any other offence, the proper step is to report the matter to the police and allow the courts to determine guilt or innocence, not to take the law into your own hands.
The rule of law exists to protect everyone. Today it may be someone else; tomorrow, it could be an innocent member of your own family.
If these reports are true, justice must be done, and those responsible should be held accountable in accordance with the law.
