Part 2: Building a New Social Media Order for Nigeria

To fix our digital ecosystem, we must start to create a framework that rewards accuracy, discourages manipulation, and empowers citizens to think critically. Platforms must be transparent about how algorithms work and why content trends. We must establish and partner with independent fact-checkers, prioritise credible sources, and slow the spread of inflammatory material. Influencers and citizen journalists must be accountable for what they publish, especially when their words can inflame a divided nation.

Government regulation should support, not suppress. Clear laws must prohibit hate speech, incitement, and verified falsehoods without silencing dissent or satire. Oversight must rest with an independent, multi-stakeholder body representing journalists, technologists, civil society, and academia. Regulation should mean coordination, not control. Transparency, not surveillance, must be the guiding principle.

Equally vital is education. We need the digital literacy to verify information, question motives, and pause before sharing. Fact-checking organisations should be funded and supported to publish in local languages. Schools and media houses must teach responsible engagement online.

Technology itself can help: AI tools can detect deepfakes and flag false content; algorithms can be audited to ensure they don’t reward emotional manipulation. This new social-media order, rooted in responsibility, transparency, and education can restore credibility, protect democracy, and make truth fashionable again. If we act wisely, our online space can shift from chaos to conscience, becoming a powerful platform for national renewal.
