He failed WAEC nine times and UTME seven times. Today, Dr Chigozie Chukwu is an Assistant Professor in the UK and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE.
Born and raised in Lagos, Chukwu lost his father young and grew up in a large family with limited resources. His early academic journey was difficult, but he kept trying.
His mother remained a source of encouragement, while Mrs Mercy Okorie continued to buy his JAMB forms when others had lost faith in him.
He eventually gained admission to the University of Abuja, graduated with Second Class Upper Honours in Economics, earned an MSc and later moved to the UK for his PhD in 2020 — arriving during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Today, the experiences that once tested him have become part of his strength as an educator. He teaches, mentors and encourages students who may be struggling or questioning their own potential.
His research in development economics and public finance also examines issues central to Nigeria’s progress, including public spending, taxation, institutions, the informal economy and human capital development.
In recent months, he has spoken to more than 500 young people through youth programmes, continuing a commitment to help others move forward.
From repeated examination failure in Lagos to academic recognition in the United Kingdom, Chukwu’s journey is a reminder that a difficult beginning does not have to define the outcome.
