Earlier this week, while heading home from CDS, I decided to use a shortcut I had discovered a few days before. The plan was to cut through the street and get to the junction where I'd take my second bus home.
The street was quite busy, so I wasn't worried. I figured if anything happened, there were enough people around to witness the downfall of my assailants.
About halfway through, I heard someone shout,
"Corper! Corper, I hail o!"
I remembered I was still wearing my NYSC uniform, so I looked up.
A dark-skinned guy with dreadlocks was sitting on a low wall a short distance away. He looked excited... or nervous. I couldn't tell which.
The moment our eyes met, he threw both hands into the air and shouted again,
"Corper! Corper!"
Mumu me now smiled.
Big mistake!
As if that smile was the signal he'd been waiting for, he jumped down and started walking toward me!š¦
I immediately increased my speed. He increased his too and within seconds, he caught up with me and stretched out his hand for a handshake.
I looked at the hand then I looked at him.
My brain immediately started running lots of calculations wondering about this guy.
Who was he?
What could he possibly want from me?
Why me?
Does he want to kidnap me?!
I finally shook his hand.
Without any warning, he started speaking Yoruba. The words were flying past me and I was just nodding.
He must have noticed the confusion on my face because he suddenly asked,
"Ewa Yoruba?"
Thanks to my many encounters with patients, I knew he was asking if I understood Yoruba.
I shook my head.
He switched to pidgin immediately.
He wished me well, prayed that I'd get a good job after NYSC, that life would favor me, and that all my plans would work out.
It was actually a nice prayer.
But while he was praying, I noticed another guy quietly walking toward us from behind me! I recognized the move immediately.
I have seen this scenario many times in action movies. I turned sharply so I could face him too. I sized him up immediately.
This one was heavily-built. He had broad shoulders, huge arms and a solid chest.
I looked him over and dismissed him.
I can take him.
He reached us, shook hands with the first guy, then turned and shook my hand too.
He then introduced himself.
I honestly didn't hear a single thing he said because I was already simulating how the fight would go if one of them suddenly brought out a knife or a gun but I heard him clearly when he added,
"...na me be number one for this area."
Number one keš
In that moment, everywhere just blurrrrr
