NMLA Annual Lecture To Highlight Automation For Nigerian Shipping Cluster

The Nigerian Maritime Law Association invites the maritime community and the general public to its 2020 Annual Lecture on the theme, 'The Role of Automation in Development of the Nigerian Shipping Cluster'.

The focus on automation in Nigeria’s shipping cluster is premised on improving efficiency, showcasing innovativeness, reducing corruption at the ports, promotion of a national fleet, and the delivery of ancillary maritime services.

The Covid-19 pandemic, recession, and the historical challenges of port congestion suggest automation as the answer for revamping economic activities in Nigeria’s interdependent shipping sector and increasing productivity, cargo throughput, and ship turnaround time. Automation is particularly instrumental to the implementation of the Nigeria Customs Service’s 48-hours cargo clearance mantra and is the pivot for the successful establishment of a Single Window platform for trade facilitation.

The lecture will examine legal and operational issues, policy and opportunities for automation in Nigeria's shipping sector. It will also focus on issues bordering on Single Window, Automation and Cargo Clearance in Nigeria; Imperative of Automation for the Nigerian Ship Registry and Fleet Development; and Legal Issues Around Automation of Shipping Operations in Nigeria.

The virtual event will hold on Thursday, December 10, 2020, at 10 am (WAT).
