Help is for the Living, not the Dead

One of life’s greatest ironies is how often we wait until it is too late to show up for people. We write long tributes when they are gone, speak highly of them at funerals, and suddenly remember all the good they did, yet when they were alive, struggling, and needing support, we were silent, absent, or too busy.

Real impact is not in what you say after someone is gone, it is in what you do while they are still here.

Help is meant for the living.
Encouragement is meant for the present.
Kindness is most powerful when it is timely.
Check on people now.
Support them now.
Celebrate them now.

Because words at the grave can never replace actions when they were alive.

Don’t wait for loss to teach you the value of presence. Be intentional. Be available. Be the reason someone finds strength while they still have the chance to rise.

Give your flowers while people can still smell them.

As a Nigerian, just pick one of these platforms and start building your page there.

People say:
“It’s already too full, everybody is making content now.”

That’s not true. It’s a big lie.
Go to any junction or bus stop in your area tomorrow evening. You will see that almost nobody there is creating videos or posts. But almost all of them are watching videos.

Some people say:
“Making content is embarrassing” or “It destroys your brain.”

Don’t listen to them.
The same person calling content “brain rot” is usually not doing anything smart with their own time. What they know how to do best is complain and criticize others.

Real talk:
About 95% of people who start creating content on these apps stop halfway and quit.

Your goal is simple — be in the small 5% that keeps going.

So:
Create content.
Make money from it.
Use that money to start a small business.
Put that business online too.
Make even more money.
Then invest the money.

Start small. Keep going. Don’t quit.

Introduction

The Call to Wisdom

Life is a journey filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and discover God. Yet many people go through life ignoring the most important truth — their relationship with their Creator.

The Bible teaches that true wisdom begins with God. Without God, a person may gain knowledge, wealth, education, and influence, yet still live in spiritual darkness.

A person can succeed in business, build houses, acquire cars, and achieve worldly success, but if their soul is lost, they have gained nothing of eternal value.

The world celebrates intelligence and achievement, but heaven celebrates salvation and righteousness.

Turning forty years old represents a stage of maturity in life. At that age, a person has experienced enough of life to understand right from wrong. They have encountered opportunities to seek God, hear the gospel, and choose righteousness.

However, some people reach forty without repentance, without salvation, and without knowing Jesus Christ.

They continue living in sin, corruption, deceit, and wickedness.

Such a condition is what this book calls “a fool at 40.”

This phrase is not meant to insult anyone but to awaken people spiritually. It is a call to reflection and repentance.

No one was created to live in spiritual ignorance.

God desires that every person know Him, walk in truth, and receive eternal life.

The good news is that it is never too late to turn to Christ.

Even if someone has spent many years living wrongly, the mercy of God is still available.

This book is written to open eyes, touch hearts, and draw people closer to Jesus Christ — the only true source of wisdom and salvation.

Chapter 1

Understanding the Meaning of a Fool

In everyday language, people think a fool is someone who lacks intelligence or education. But the Bible describes foolishness differently.

A fool, according to Scripture, is someone who rejects God's authority and lives according to their own desires.

Foolishness is not about lack of education. It is about lack of spiritual understanding.

A person may hold degrees, speak eloquently, and command respect in society, yet still be spiritually foolish if they do not know God.

True wisdom begins with reverence for God.

When a person acknowledges God, obeys His commandments, and seeks His guidance, they begin to walk in wisdom.

However, when someone ignores God and lives as though God does not exist, they walk in foolishness.

This is why many intelligent people still live destructive lives.

They pursue money without morality.

They chase pleasure without discipline.

They seek power without righteousness.

Foolishness also appears when a person refuses correction.

Some people hear the truth many times, but they reject it.

They hear sermons, read the Bible, and receive warnings, yet they refuse to change their ways.

Over time, their hearts become hardened.

This is the danger of spiritual foolishness.

The longer a person ignores truth, the deeper they sink into deception.

Wisdom calls people to humility.

Wisdom invites people to seek God.

Wisdom leads people to repentance and transformation.

The person who finds Christ finds true wisdom.

Chapter 2

Who Is a Fool at 40?

The phrase “a fool at 40” refers to someone who has reached a mature stage in life yet continues to live without the knowledge of God.

Age brings responsibility.

As people grow older, they are expected to grow wiser.

But sadly, many people grow older without growing wiser.

Here are some examples of those who may be considered spiritually foolish at forty.

Those Who Do Not Know Jesus

Jesus Christ is the only way to God. Anyone who lives their entire life without seeking Christ is missing the most important truth of existence.

Salvation is not found in religion, wealth, or good works.

It is found only through Jesus Christ.

Those Who Continue Living in Sin

Some people know what is right but deliberately choose wrong.

They continue in stealing, cheating, lying, and corruption.

Some live immoral lifestyles without repentance.

Others take advantage of people, oppress the weak, and abuse their power.

Living in sin without repentance leads to destruction.

Those Who Reject the Truth

Some people hear the gospel many times but refuse to accept it.

They believe they have plenty of time to change.

But life is unpredictable.

Every day is a gift from God, and tomorrow is never guaranteed.

Those Who Live Without Purpose

God created every human with purpose. But many people spend decades chasing money, pleasure, and temporary success without seeking God’s purpose.

They may gain the world but lose their soul.

Chapter 3

The Danger of Remaining a Fool

Remaining in spiritual ignorance is dangerous.

Life on earth is temporary. No one knows the exact number of their days.

Many people plan for retirement, build businesses, and prepare for the future, yet they neglect preparation for eternity.

Ignoring God does not remove accountability.

One day every person will stand before God.

Another danger of spiritual foolishness is a hardened heart.

When people repeatedly ignore God's voice, they gradually lose sensitivity to truth.

Sin becomes normal.

Wrong actions become habits.

Eventually, the person begins to justify evil.

They call good evil and evil good.

At this stage, repentance becomes more difficult because pride has taken control of the heart.

But God's mercy is still available.

As long as a person is alive, they still have an opportunity to repent.

This is why the message of salvation is urgent.

Chapter 4

The Truth That Sets People Free

Freedom begins when a person discovers the truth.

Many people are trapped by sin, addiction, guilt, and spiritual bo***ge.

Some are prisoners of greed.

Some are prisoners of lust.

Some are prisoners of pride.

But the truth of the gospel has the power to break every chain.

The message of salvation is simple:

All humans have sinned.

No one is perfect.

Because of sin, humanity became separated from God.

But God's love for humanity is so great that He provided a solution.

Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners.

He died on the cross for the sins of humanity and rose again to give new life to everyone who believes.

Through Christ, forgiveness is available.

Through Christ, transformation is possible.

Through Christ, eternal life becomes a reality.

Knowing the truth brings freedom.

Chapter 5

Turning From Foolishness to Wisdom

The good news is that no one has to remain a fool.

Even if someone has spent forty years living in sin, God can transform their life in a moment.

Transformation begins with repentance.

Repentance means turning away from sin and choosing a new direction.

It requires humility and honesty before God.

The second step is faith.

Faith means believing that Jesus Christ died for your sins and rose again.

The third step is obedience.

A transformed life begins to follow God's word.

Old habits are replaced with righteous living.

Selfishness is replaced with love.

Corruption is replaced with integrity.

Wickedness is replaced with kindness.

When a person truly encounters Christ, their life begins to change.

Their thinking changes.

Their desires change.

Their purpose changes.

They become a new creation.

Chapter 6

No One Should Be a Fool at 40

God's desire is that every person come to repentance.

No one was created to live in spiritual darkness.

Forty years of life is enough time for a person to discover truth.

But if someone has reached that age without knowing Christ, the good news is that it is not too late.

Today can mark a new beginning.

Today can mark a transformation.

Today can mark the end of foolishness and the beginning of wisdom.

Jesus Christ is still calling people to Himself.

His arms are open to anyone who will come.

No matter the past.

No matter the mistakes.

No matter the years wasted.

God's mercy is greater.

No one deserves to remain a fool at forty.

Everyone deserves the opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ and experience the wisdom that leads to eternal life.

Final Call to Salvation

If you have read this book and realize that you need a relationship with Jesus Christ, you can begin today.

Pray this prayer sincerely:

“Lord Jesus, I come before you today. I acknowledge that I am a sinner and I need your mercy. I believe that you died for my sins and rose again. Please forgive me and come into my life. From today, I choose to follow you. Transform my heart and guide my life. Amen.”

If you prayed this prayer sincerely, your journey of wisdom has begun.

You are no longer living in spiritual foolishness.

You are now walking in truth.

The Silent Struggle of E-Hailing Drivers in Abuja

In Abuja, thousands of e-hailing drivers wake up every day with the same hope — to work hard and return home with enough money to feed their families.

But today, that hope is slowly fading.

The recent increase in fuel price has turned what used to be a manageable job into a daily struggle for survival. A full tank that once allowed drivers to work comfortably now consumes most of their daily income.

Yet the ride fares remain unchanged.

Passengers still book rides through platforms like Uber and Bolt at the same prices that were set when fuel was far cheaper. While everything else in the country has increased, the earnings of drivers have remained almost the same.

The result is heartbreaking.

Many drivers now spend long hours on the road only to discover that after fuel costs and company commission are deducted, there is barely anything left.

Some drivers skip meals just to keep working.
Some sleep in their cars because they cannot afford the cost of commuting home and back.
Some have parked their vehicles completely because driving has become a loss instead of a livelihood.

Behind every ride request is a driver silently calculating:

“Will this trip even cover my fuel?”

Passengers often complain about drivers cancelling rides, but many do not understand the difficult reality drivers face. A trip that looks normal on the app may actually cost the driver more money than it pays.

These drivers are not asking for luxury.

They are asking for fairness.

They are asking that the companies recognize the harsh economic realities on the ground and adjust fares to reflect the rising cost of fuel and vehicle maintenance.

Because right now, many e-hailing drivers are not truly earning.

They are simply surviving.

And if nothing changes soon, the roads of Abuja may slowly lose the very drivers that keep the city moving.

In the early morning haze of Abuja's Kubwa, where the call to prayer mixes with the roar of okada and generators, Chinedu Okoro wakes up at 4:45 a.m. sharp. Forty-two years old, former civil servant wey dem sack for 2022 because of "restructuring." Now him na full-time Bolt and inDrive driver. Two pikin for secondary school—Nneka wan write WAEC soon, Chukwudi still dey secondary. Wife Adaora dey manage small provision shop for market, but na beans and garri dem dey chop these days.

Chinedu drag himself go outside, open the boot of him old Toyota Corolla (bought second-hand for ₦5.2 million with bank loan wey interest dey chop like fire). Him check fuel gauge—almost empty. Yesterday fuel na ₦1,165 for NNPC station for Abuja (some places even reach ₦1,200–1,300 because of this Middle East wahala). Him go queue for black market because official ones don finish. ₦35,000–₦40,000 just to fill the 40-litre tank. Before sun even rise proper, money don go.

Him enter car, engine cough like person wey get catarrh. The shocks don weak, brake pad screaming every time him press. One shock absorber change now cost ₦90,000–₦120,000. Tyre? ₦80,000 each for good one. No app dey help with maintenance. "Your motor, your wahala," na wetin dem write for terms wey nobody dey read.

First trip ping by 6 a.m.: Kubwa to Airport Road, app show ₦3,800. After Bolt or inDrive collect their own commission (Bolt dey talk 20–25%, inDrive sometimes lower but with extra fees, plus VAT and booking fee), Chinedu see maybe ₦2,500–₦2,800 enter him account. Fuel for that trip alone swallow ₦1,500–₦2,000. Time, wear and tear, risk—all on top.

Passenger enter—big man in suit, aircon full blast. Him dey shout for phone: "These drivers sef, una too slow! Na why Nigeria no dey move forward!" Chinedu swallow him vex, smile small. One bad rating fit block am for days. Another passenger last week vomit for back seat, report "dirty car," app deduct ₦6,000 cleaning fee sharp-sharp and suspend am 72 hours. Him still dey pay loan installment every month.

Competition too much. New drivers dey join every day—graduates, sacked bankers, even retired people. Fares dey crash because of am. Trip wey suppose be ₦8,000–₦10,000 for 2021 now na ₦4,000–₦5,500. Surge? E no dey show face when fuel high like this.

No government regulation protect driver. No minimum fare, no cap on how much app fit chop, no insurance if area boys attack you for night. Last month for Gwagwalada, dem shoot three drivers wey pick "passenger" wey turn out to be armed robbers. Chinedu own car still get small bullet mark for door—him patch am with black tape. App message: "Sorry for your inconvenience. Keep your rating high to stay active."

Taxes dey kill am soft-soft: council levy, state permit, police "settlement" for checkpoint, app VAT, new "tech levy" wey government introduce. By the time him finish pay everything, 35–45% of him daily money don go before him buy pure water.

One Tuesday afternoon, after nine trips and only ₦20,000–₦22,000 enter wallet (after fuel, commission, and small "settlement" for LASTMA), him get call from bank: "Your loan overdue 50 days. We go come collect motor soon." Him park for roadside near Jabi, engine still running, tears just fall. Him remember Adaora sell her gold chain last Christmas to help pay one installment. Him remember Nneka beg am for WAEC form money—₦50,000+ him no get.

That night for their small face-me-I-face-you room, under weak yellow bulb, Adaora hold him hand wey don rough from steering wheel. "Babe, I no fit continue like this," him whisper, voice shake. "App dey chop my sweat, fuel dey drink my blood, passenger dey insult my papa name, police dey collect my peace, bank wan carry my motor. Every day I drive, I dey lose small small piece of myself. But if I stop... our pikin go hunger."

Adaora wipe him face, hug am tight. "Na God go see us. We no be number for app. We be fathers and mothers wey dey try keep this country moving, even when e dey try break us."

Outside, another driver's horn blow—somebody else chasing the same empty dream. For Abuja night, thousands of Chinedu still dey drive, eyes red, heart heavy pass fuel tank wey half empty. Apps dey post fine-fine advert: "Join us, earn big!" But the men behind the wheel know the real talk: dem no be partners. Dem be fuel wey dey burn for machine wey no dey ever stop to check if driver don tire.

And for that same dark, Chinedu close eye, call him pikin names like prayer, and wonder how long person fit bleed before everybody finally see say the blood na red like every other Nigerian own. E pain pass words. But na our story.
