I’m a school nurse. We have a rule. Kids without lunch money get a cold cheese sandwich. Nothing else. It’s policy. This boy came in one Wednesday. Sixth grader. Stomach pain he said. I’ve been doing this twenty years. I know real stomach pain and I know hunger. “When did you last eat?” He looked at the floor. “Yesterday lunch.”

Sent him to the cafeteria with a note. Told them to give him a full hot meal. Pasta. Salad. Milk. The works. Cafeteria lady looked at my note. Looked at me. Gave him the tray without a word. He ate like he hadn’t seen food in days. Probably hadn’t. Came back to my office after. “Am I in trouble?” “For what?” “For eating.” “That’s what food is for.”
Started keeping granola bars, peanut butter crackers, juice boxes in my bottom drawer. For kids who come in with headaches that are really hunger. Stomachaches that are really empty. I’m not supposed to. Technically against policy. Don’t care. Told my principal once. She looked at me for a long moment.

Opened her desk drawer. Showed me her stash. Crackers. Fruit snacks. Applesauce. “What drawer?” she said. We never spoke of it again.
That sixth grader is in high school now. Came to find me last spring. “I just wanted you to know I’m okay. And that I remembered. I always will.” He volunteers at a food bank on weekends. Has since he was thirteen.
Best granola bars I ever bought.

When I was little, our neighbor used to “randomly” drop off food at our house. Like full meals… not leftovers. I thought she just liked cooking too much or something. Every time she came by, she’d joke like “oops, made too much again.”
I used to get excited because it meant we were eating good that night.
A few years ago I mentioned it to my mom, laughing about how extra our neighbor was back then.
My mom got quiet for a second and then said, “She knew.”
Turns out there were weeks we barely had anything in the house. My mom was trying to hold everything together and thought she was hiding it well.
But our neighbor noticed. And instead of making it awkward or saying anything, she just pretended it was an accident… over and over again.
All those “oops” meals?
She was feeding us on purpose.

I opened the email shaking.

“Congratulations.”
MIT.
My dream school since 7th grade.

I should be screaming. Popping champagne. Calling my mom.

Instead I’m crying in my car.

Because my boyfriend looked at the letter and said:
“Don’t go. Come to State with me. If you choose MIT, you’re choosing yourself over us. Long distance never works.”

Now I’m stuck.

On one side: Everything I’ve worked for.
4.0 GPA. AP classes. Science fairs. Missing prom to study.
I EARNED this.

On the other side: Him. 2 years together. The guy who said he was proud of me… until I actually did it.

He says I’m selfish for wanting to leave.
But isn’t it selfish to ask me to burn my future so he’s comfortable?

He wants me to make my world smaller so he doesn’t have to be scared.
MIT is my chance to make it bigger.

So I’m asking you, because I honestly don’t know anymore:

Am I selfish for choosing MIT?
Or would I be a fool to give it up for a boy?

As a mother one of my greatest feaAr during school days is when my phone rings and it’s my child’s teacher. Haaaa, like my mind will skip, fly infact I can’t explain this. Why? I don’t know what they are calling for and the feaAr of a negative report is what am not ready to hear.
