Insecurity, Power Supply and the Need for Responsible Leadership in Nigeria
Nigeria is facing one of the most challenging periods in its history, with insecurity and an unreliable power supply continuing to undermine the nation's economic growth, social stability and the well-being of its citizens.
The persistent wave of kidnappings, killings, banditry and other violent crimes across different parts of the country has left many Nigerians living in fear. Families are unable to travel freely, farmers are abandoning their farms, businesses are suffering losses and communities are being devastated by criminal activities. Every government has a constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and property of its citizens, and many Nigerians believe that the current administration has not met public expectations in this regard.
There is also widespread concern about the state of electricity supply. Before the 2023 presidential election, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu publicly stated that if he failed to improve electricity in the country, Nigerians should not vote for him again. As the nation continues to grapple with frequent power outages and inadequate electricity generation and distribution, many citizens are questioning whether that promise has been fulfilled.
The combination of worsening insecurity and poor power infrastructure has placed enormous pressure on households and businesses. Manufacturers are struggling with high operating costs, small businesses are closing, unemployment remains a challenge, and ordinary Nigerians continue to bear the burden of economic hardship.
Democracy provides citizens with the opportunity to hold leaders accountable through the ballot box. Nigerians should therefore actively participate in the democratic process by obtaining and safeguarding their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and exercising their constitutional right to vote peacefully during elections.
The future of the country depends on informed choices made by the electorate. Citizens should evaluate candidates based on their competence, integrity, track record and ability to address the nation's pressing challenges rather than on ethnicity, religion or political patronage.
Nigeria deserves leadership that can effectively tackle insecurity, deliver stable electricity, strengthen the economy and improve the quality of life for all. The responsibility of choosing such leadership ultimately rests with the people.
Why Nigerians Must Vote For Competence in 2027.
The primary responsibility of any government is the protection of lives and property. It is the foundation upon which every other aspect of governance rests. Without security, economic development becomes difficult, investments decline, businesses struggle, and citizens live in constant fear.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, many citizens are questioning whether the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has lived up to this fundamental responsibility. Across different parts of the country, incidents of kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, armed robbery and violent attacks have continued to dominate national discourse, leaving countless families in grief and communities in distress.
From the North to the South, stories of schoolchildren, commuters, farmers and ordinary citizens being abducted or killed have become disturbingly frequent. The fear of travelling on major highways, cultivating farmlands or even carrying out daily activities has become a reality for many Nigerians.
For many observers, this raises serious questions about the effectiveness of the current administration's security strategy. While security agencies have recorded successes in some operations, many Nigerians believe these efforts have not translated into the level of safety they expected when President Tinubu assumed office.
Beyond insecurity, the country's electricity sector remains another major source of concern. During the 2023 election campaign, President Tinubu made public commitments regarding improving power supply and urged Nigerians to hold him accountable for his performance. Yet millions of homes and businesses continue to struggle with erratic electricity, forcing many to depend on expensive generators and alternative energy sources.
The combined effect of insecurity and inadequate power supply has deepened economic hardship. Investors remain cautious, local businesses face rising operational costs, unemployment persists and inflation continues to erode the purchasing power of ordinary citizens.
Democracy offers citizens the opportunity to assess the performance of elected leaders and make choices based on results. Elections are the constitutional mechanism through which governments are rewarded or replaced.
For Nigerians who believe the current administration has failed to provide adequate security, improve electricity supply and effectively address the nation's pressing challenges, the 2027 election presents an opportunity to express that judgment through the ballot box.
Citizens should therefore ensure they possess valid Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), participate peacefully in the electoral process and vote according to their convictions and assessment of each candidate's competence, vision and record.
Ultimately, the future of Nigeria depends not only on those who seek public office but also on the willingness of voters to demand accountability and support leaders they believe can better protect lives, strengthen the economy and fulfil the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
