WHO WILL BELL THE CAT!!
Am writing this from a place of concern and increasing fear about how the ignorance of our traders especially those who sell consumables will keep affecting us all unless we do something fast.
NAFDAC and Collective Individuals need to step up and out FAST.
There need to be serious awareness and reeducating of our market men and women.
I believe its ignorance not wickedness that makes the beans seller spray fumigation on his beans to combat weevils.
The same ignorance made a fish seller spray his dry fishes with sniper and tell his customer to please wait till the smell evaporates before eating such fish (can you see ignorance at work). By the way, this is real life incidence not a fiction.
So many of such incidence. I remember when I was younger in the early 90s, people were dying as a result of eating beans. It was later realized that some chemical were mixed with the beans to combat weevils but the beans was not well dried before being sold to the market, hence the fatalities.
Are you aware Nigerian beans is not exported because it couldn't meet with the required safety procedure of most countries?
Sometime in 2016 or thereabout in Ibadan, some organization donated insecticide treated net to market women and men. Before that week ran out, many of them had cut portions of the said net and were using it to cover their wares.
When I was serving, a colleague in my dorm who used this net to cover her bed and slept under it without first airing had to be taken to the clinic the next day and was sick for days- this is the same net these traders used in covering edibles. Can you see ignorance at work?
It was a cool and beautiful sight to behold and I really appreciate what these traders were trying to achieve but alas! It is dangerous...very very dangerous.
Have you wondered why so many strange diseases and illness abound in today's society? Seek no further. Our food consumption is a major culprit.
Who will bell the cat?
NAFDAC seem more interested in the big shots than our markets. No one seem to bother educating these traders about the dangers in what they're doing.
Like a line from the poem I read on yesterday from Timothy, 'we sit back biting our own fingers and crying about how much blood gushes out'.
We need to start educating these traders about the harm in their practices.
