Warri–Itakpe Train Derails, Three Passengers Confirmed Dead

Three passengers have been confirmed dead following the derailment of a train on the Warri–Itakpe railway service.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation confirmed that the incident occurred on Monday, June 8, 2026.

In a statement signed by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Kayode Opeifa, the NRC said emergency response teams and relevant authorities were already at the scene providing assistance.

The corporation said it is closely monitoring the situation and would issue a detailed statement as more information becomes available.

The incident comes shortly after the Warri–Itakpe Train Service resumed operations following a temporary suspension for operational assessment and safety checks.

The route had also recorded a derailment in November 2025, which the NRC linked to vandalism.

The Inspector-General of Police has assured Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to extend the INTERPOL communication network as part of moves to improve crime detection, intelligence sharing, and cross-border policing.

The initiative is expected to strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force to track criminal activities, share security information faster, and improve cooperation with international law enforcement agencies.

The move comes amid growing concerns over kidnapping, cybercrime, terrorism, human trafficking, fraud, and other organised crimes that often involve networks operating across state and national borders.

With an expanded INTERPOL communication system, security agencies are expected to have better access to real-time information that can support investigations, arrests, and prosecution of suspects.

The police leadership said strengthening international security collaboration remains critical to tackling modern crime and protecting Nigerians.

The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee has recovered ₦521.8 million in unremitted Value Added Tax from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The recovery followed an investigation into revenue leakages linked to transactions conducted through the Remita platform and compliance with financial regulations under the Treasury Single Account system.

Chairman of the committee, Bamidele Salam, said the panel’s review of transactions and remittances uncovered liabilities owed to the Federal Government.

According to the committee, the CBN failed to remit ₦521,765,134.17, representing VAT on fees earned from Remita transactions between November 2018 and April 2024.

Following the discovery, the committee directed the apex bank to remit the outstanding amount into the Federal Government Treasury and provide evidence of compliance.

In a letter dated May 7, 2026, the CBN reportedly confirmed that it had complied with the directive and submitted documents showing that the money had been remitted.

Salam described the recovery as proof that legislative oversight can help safeguard public funds and strengthen accountability in revenue management.

Bandits have abducted 50 elderly residents of Magamin Diddi village in Magami/Faru ward of Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State.

The victims were reportedly kidnapped while on a reconciliation mission to meet a notorious bandit kingpin identified as Jammo, who operates from Muntsira Forest in Maradun LGA.

According to reports, the elders had gone to negotiate with the bandits after repeated restrictions on residents’ access to markets and rising insecurity in the area.

The councillor representing Magami/Faru ward, Bello Husseini, said the community sent a 50-man committee to meet the bandit leader, but the mission turned tragic when the group was held hostage.

He said the bandit kingpin later released 11 persons, while others remained in captivity.

Husseini also claimed that Jammo is demanding ₦24 million over three rifles allegedly seized during earlier clashes involving local security operatives.

Chairman of Maradun Local Government Area, Bello Dosara, confirmed the incident, saying the reconciliation move was carried out without the approval of the local or state government.

Dosara said Governor Dauda Lawal’s administration remains opposed to reconciliation with bandits, stressing that such groups cannot be trusted.

Shettima Says Lagos Holds Key To Nigeria’s $1trn Economy Ambition

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said Nigeria’s ambition to build a one-trillion-dollar economy depends on enterprise, investment and coordinated reforms across all levels of government.

Shettima stated this while representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the opening session of the Invest Lagos 3.0 Summit held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Delivering the keynote address, the Vice President said Nigeria’s economic future depends on creating the right conditions for capital, innovation and productive enterprise to thrive.

He described Lagos State as the clearest example of how strong subnational leadership can accelerate national economic transformation.

According to him, Lagos has continued to demonstrate the power of long-term planning, infrastructure development, private sector participation and policy consistency.

Shettima said the Tinubu administration remains committed to reforms that will unlock investment, deepen productivity and position Nigeria as a major economic force in Africa.

The summit brought together government officials, investors, business leaders and development partners to explore opportunities for growth, partnerships and sustainable investment.

Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has warned Peter Obi to be careful of his political alliance with former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Ayodele claimed that Kwankwaso is not genuinely loyal to Obi and may eventually betray him ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

According to him, Kwankwaso’s emergence as Obi’s running mate under the Nigeria Democratic Congress should be handled with caution.

“Kwankwaso will betray Obi. Kwankwaso is paid to be VP to Obi,” Ayodele alleged.

The cleric further warned that the alliance could create political complications for Obi if not properly managed.

Abducted Oyo Vice Principal Speaks From Captivity

Mrs. Alamu Folawe, the abducted Vice Principal of Community Grammar School, Ahoro-Esinele in Oyo State, has appeared in a new video released on June 8, 2026, pleading for urgent action to secure her freedom.

Speaking from captivity, Mrs. Folawe alleged that her captors are not demanding the imposition of Sharia law or financial ransom but are seeking the release of some of their detained members.

"They are not asking for Sharia law or money, they are only asking for the release of some of their men. Government should stop playing politics with our lives," she said in the video.

Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has criticised what he described as unequal attention given to kidnapping victims in Nigeria.

Ayodele said the children of poor Nigerians are often left in captivity without urgent rescue, while victims from wealthy or influential families appear to get faster security attention.

“The children of poor people were kidnapped and nobody rescued them, but the children of the rich were quickly rescued because they have money,” he said.

The cleric’s remarks follow debates over the swift rescue of relatives of former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, after they were kidnapped in Ibadan.

Many Nigerians have questioned why some kidnapping cases receive faster response than others, especially when victims are schoolchildren from rural or low-income communities.

Ayodele urged authorities to treat every Nigerian life with equal urgency, stressing that poor families also deserve protection, justice and swift rescue operations.
