The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested Manaseh Bitrus Jatau in connection with the death of his 35-year-old girlfriend, Rebecca Ojonike Jeremiah, in the Romi area of Kaduna State.

Police said Rebecca’s lifeless body was found along Mai Angwa Street, Romi, at about 7:00 a.m. on September 5, with cotton wool reportedly stuffed in her nose. Detectives took her to St. Gerald Hospital, Kakuri, where she was confirmed dead by a medical doctor. Her remains were deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

According to the police, preliminary investigation showed that Jatau was the last person to call Rebecca and had asked her to meet him at Ebano Joint in Romi. He was later traced and arrested at his workplace, Tomato Jos Company, in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna.

The Command said Jatau allegedly confessed during interrogation that he had a fight with Rebecca in his room over a phone call from another woman. Police said he also allegedly confessed to dumping her body in an open field near his house in an attempt to conceal the crime.

Jatau remains in police custody as investigation continues. The Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, condemned acts of violence and assured the public that the Command would pursue justice for the deceased. Police said the suspect will be charged to court after the investigation is concluded.

Shettima Arrives India to Represent Tinubu at 18th BRICS Summit

Protesters in South Africa have given undocumented migrants until September 30 to leave the country, threatening larger demonstrations if their demands are not met.

The latest development follows weeks of protests in Durban against undocumented immigration. Protest leader Sphelele Shinga said activists were preparing for another major demonstration on September 30, with as many as 1.5 million people expected to participate.

Shinga said protesters wanted undocumented migrants to leave South Africa, as the movement continues to gain momentum. The groups have blamed undocumented immigration for some of the country's social and economic problems.

The Nigerian community in South Africa has been thrown into mourning following the alleged killing of 58-year-old Nigerian bishop, Taiwo Michael Fakunle, at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg.

Fakunle, an indigene of Iye in Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State, was allegedly killed on Friday, September 4, 2026. The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa (NICASA) said the circumstances surrounding his death had left his family, church community and Nigerians in South Africa devastated.

According to NICASA, two suspects allegedly gained access to the bishop’s residence and opened fire on him, reportedly shooting him more than seven times. The association described the incident as a horrific and senseless act of violence and expressed concern over the continued loss of Nigerian lives to violent crime in South Africa.

NICASA President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, said the incident had been reported to the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg. A murder case has also been opened at Jeppe Police Station as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the bishop’s death.

NICASA has called on Nigerian diplomatic authorities to continue engaging with South African authorities and closely monitor the investigation until justice is served. The association also urged relevant authorities to ensure that those responsible for Fakunle’s alleged killing are identified and held accountable.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the Federal Government’s alleged failure to implement key provisions of the 2025 agreement reached with the union.

One Dead, Two Rescued After Building Collapses During Demolition in Lagos

One person has died while two others were rescued alive after a two-storey building undergoing manual demolition partially collapsed in the Aboru area of Alimosho, Lagos State.

The incident occurred at about 12:56 a.m. at No. 42, Governors Road, Aboru, after the structure reportedly collapsed during demolition activities, trapping workers beneath the rubble. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) immediately deployed its Alpha Eagle Response Team to the scene.

LASEMA said it assumed incident command and activated the state’s Emergency Response Plan to coordinate the multi-agency rescue operation. Two adult males were successfully extricated alive from the debris and given emergency first aid by personnel of the Lagos State Ambulance Service before being taken to a nearby health facility.

However, one adult male was recovered dead from beneath the collapsed structure. The rescue operation is being conducted by LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and LASAMBUS, with the area cordoned off to protect residents and allow emergency responders to operate safely.

LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, urged developers and members of the public to comply with building regulations and engage certified professionals for demolition and construction work. He also urged residents to report unsafe building activities through the 767 or 112 emergency numbers.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) plans to train 1.5 million members of its support groups to protect the party’s votes at polling units during the 2027 general elections.

Makinde Inspects New Ibadan Airport Terminal, Targets Completion Before Year-End

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has inspected the terminal being constructed at the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, as part of efforts to upgrade the facility into an international airport.
