Parents often wonder whether speaking their native language at home might hinder their child's ability to learn and succeed in school, especially in countries like Nigeria, where English is the official language of instruction. Some parents opt to exclusively speak English, believing it will give their children an academic edge. However, research shows that raising bilingual children or teaching them multiple languages—including their native language—actually has numerous cognitive and developmental benefits.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝘁 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲

According to a study by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), bilingual children often outperform their peers in tasks that require multitasking or focusing on key information amidst distractions.

𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆: Language is an essential part of culture. Speaking your native language at home helps children understand and appreciate their roots, which strengthens their identity.
