If your child is doing their homework, does that mean they understand the topic?

Not always.

A child can complete an assignment correctly because they memorised a method, copied an example, or received help along the way.

True understanding shows when they can:

• Explain what they have learnt in their own words.
• Apply the concept to a different question.
• Work through a problem without being guided step-by-step.
• Recognise and correct their own mistakes.
• Use what they learnt in a new situation.

So when checking your child's schoolwork, don't only ask, “Have you finished your assignment?”

Sometimes, ask:

“Can you explain this to me?”

That simple question can tell you much more about your child's understanding.

A Monday Reminder for Every Parent

Your child doesn't need you to know everything.

They need you to pay attention.

Pay attention to what they find difficult.

Pay attention to the topics they suddenly avoid.

Pay attention when they keep making the same mistake.

Pay attention to how they feel about learning.

Sometimes, a child may appear distracted, slow, stubborn, or uninterested when the real problem is that they simply don't understand what they're being taught or they've lost confidence in their ability to learn it.

So this week, take a little time to check in.

Ask them what they learnt.
Look through their assignments.
Listen to them read.
Ask questions.
Celebrate the things they're getting right.
And when they struggle, don't immediately assume they're not trying.

Sometimes, your attention is the first step towards understanding what your child actually needs.

A little consistency at home can make a big difference in the classroom.

If there is one thing teaching has taught me, it is that every child has a strength, you just have to be intentional enough to find it.

I've taught children who could solve a difficult problem in seconds but struggled to explain how they got the answer.

I've taught children who were quiet in class but could produce the most thoughtful work when given the opportunity.

I've taught children who didn't seem interested at first, only to completely surprise everyone once they found something they genuinely enjoyed.

And that's one of the things I love about teaching.

Children are not always going to shine in the same way.

One child may shine academically.
Another may be incredibly creative.
Another may be an excellent communicator.
Another may be curious, analytical, imaginative, or naturally good at solving problems.

Sometimes, the difference isn't ability.

Sometimes, a child simply needs the right environment, the right approach, and someone who takes the time to notice what they can do.

Every child has something.

Our job as educators is to help them discover it, develop it, and believe in it.

Are you planning to change your child's school for the new academic session?

Then, this is something you should think about before the new term begins.

A new school can mean a different curriculum, different teaching methods, new teachers, new classroom routines, and sometimes, different academic expectations.

So before your child resumes, find out where they currently stand academically.

What have they mastered?

What are they struggling with?

Are there topics they should already know but haven't fully understood?

Identifying these gaps early gives you time to work on them before the new academic year begins.

Your child shouldn't have to enter a new classroom already trying to catch up.

If you're changing schools this session, start preparing for the transition early.

Give your child the confidence of knowing that they are ready for what comes next.

Yesterday, I shared some of the reasons many Nigerian parents are hesitant about online learning.

The truth is, those concerns didn't come out of nowhere.

Many parents have genuinely had disappointing experiences.

But here's what I've learned:

The problem isn't online learning. The problem is poor online learning.

There's a huge difference.

A child sitting in front of a screen for an hour is not the same as a child being actively taught.

A tutor reading from a textbook is not the same as a tutor who knows how to engage, question, explain, and adapt to a child's learning pace.

Technology doesn't teach children.

Teachers do. Structure does. Consistency does.

When online classes are intentional, interactive, and well-organized, children don't just attend, they learn, participate, ask questions, and build confidence.

So before deciding that online learning doesn't work, ask a different question:

Was it the online classroom that failed... or was it the learning experience?

I recently had conversations with several Nigerian parents, and one question kept coming up: Why are so many parents still hesitant about online learning?

The answers were surprisingly similar.

Here are some of the concerns they shared:

❌ "Children don't really learn effectively online."

❌ "Online classes are too distracting."

❌ "My child tried an online class before, and it wasn't worth it."

❌ Some parents have had disappointing experiences with tutors who lacked professionalism, proper structure, or engaging teaching methods and unfortunately, those experiences have shaped their perception of online education as a whole.

❌ Many parents also believe that online learning simply cannot match the quality of physical classrooms.

These concerns are valid, and they're more common than you might think.

But are they the full picture?

If you're an online tutor struggling to get hired, this might be why...

Recently, I recruited tutors for Mindnest Academy, and one thing stood out immediately.

About 95% of the applications came with the wrong CV.

You're applying for an English Tutor or Mathematics Tutor role, but your CV is written for a:
• Graphic Designer
• Web Developer
• Content Creator
• Public Health Officer
• Virtual Assistant

Then you wonder why you don't get shortlisted.

Here's the truth:

Your CV should match the job you're applying for.

If you're applying as an online tutor, your CV should highlight:
✅ Teaching experience
✅ Subjects you teach
✅ Age groups or grade levels you've taught
✅ Online teaching tools you can use (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, etc.)
✅ Relevant education and certifications

If you have experience in other fields, that's fine, but don't make it the focus of your tutoring application.

Create different versions of your CV for different career paths. It takes a little extra effort, but it significantly increases your chances of getting noticed.

Before you click Apply, ask yourself one question:

"Does this CV clearly show that I'm the right person for this teaching job?"

It could be the difference between getting ignored and getting an interview.
