UNIMAID AT 50: VP shettima says Improved Investment in Education Reflects Renewed Vigour under President Tinubu

Vice President Kashim Shettima has said the improved investment in Nigeria's education sector by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reflects the renewed vigour to properly situate the nation in the global knowledge economy. He warned that Nigeria cannot compete globally if its universities remain underfunded, stressing that sustained investment in education is now a core pillar of national development and security under President Tinubu administration. The Vice President reaffirmed the federal government's commitment to transforming Nigeria's education sector through increased funding and comprehensive reforms. He was speaking on Saturday in Maiduguri at a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State. Speaking on the focus of the administration of President Tinubu, the Vice President said "...the administration has not come to pay lip service to education.

It recognize that the soul of national development lies in what the citizens know, what they can imagine, and what they can create. VP Shettima disclosed that "in the 2025 Budget, education received a total of 3.5 trillion naira, amounting to 7.3 percent of the national budget, an increase from the previous year. Senator Shettima however acknowledged indeed the challenges that have persisted, noting that "for decades, underfunding has weakened the foundations of our education system. International benchmarks recommend that between fifteen and twenty percent of national budgets be devoted to education, yet we have often fallen short. We have fallen short because we are compelled to balance competing national priorities such as security, healthcare, and infrastructure."

Reflecting on the impact of insecurity on education in the North-East, the Vice President recalled that over 500 schools were attacked in Borno State between 2009 and 2021, with thousands of classrooms destroyed and teachers killed or displaced. However, he said the state has staged a remarkable recovery. As at March 2025, 877,777 learners were enrolled in public schools across Borno, with the state committing ₦69.81 billion to education. Over 26,000 students had their WAEC fees paid by the government, while daily school feeding now costs about ₦122 million. Earlier, Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Zulum, said the state government was proud of the legacies of the University of Maiduguri and announced the award of scholarships for further studies to 200 lecturers from the institution.

He said the institution has been instrumental in the state’s human parietal development efforts as well as economic blueprints over the years. In the same vein, Governor Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa State who announced a donation of N1.8 billion on behalf of the states in the northeast region for the University's endowment fund, commended efforts aimed at expanding funding sources for the institution through partnerships with the private sector and individuals. For his part, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Prof. Mohammed Mele, said the anniversary event was a celebration of success, resilience and perseverance in the face of conflict, recalling the challenges faced by the institution due to the insurgency. He sought improved collaboration with the private sector to complement government funding of the institution, in its bid to sustain strides recorded in various fields.

VP Shettima Seeks Deeper Executive-Legislature Ties, Alignment Of Purpose In Nation-building

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, has sought a deeper collaboration between the executive and legislature, saying the two arms of government must work towards aligning their purpose and unshakable resolve to build a Nigeria that works for all the citizens. This, he noted, explains why the relationship between the two arms of government under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had "been a harmony rooted in leadership, foresight, and collective resolve."

The Vice President stated this in Abuja during a dinner with members of the National Assembly organized by the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa. He said under the Tinubu administration, the nation is currently enjoying the best working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government since the return of democracy in 1999.

Senator Shettima, however, called for a deeper collaboration between the two arms of government, stating that "the true essence of democracy manifests not only in respecting the Legislature, but in appreciating the indispensable role each arm plays in the architecture of governance.

Earlier, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and the speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas said while insecurity was not peculiar to Nigeria, the right measures are being taken to tackle the menace. They assured that the National Assembly is determined and united in supporting the President in addressing security challenges across the country.

For her part, the host of the dinner, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who described the event as a good reunion with her former colleagues in the National Assembly, called for a sustained provision of education to all Nigerian children to enable them thrive.

Prof Osibanjo Urge Government to End Idp Crisis

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called on the Federal Government to develop a comprehensive national strategy to address Nigeria’s worsening Internally Displaced Persons crisis.

Represented by his former Chief of Staff, Ade Ipaye, at the 10th House of Justice Summit in Kaduna, themed “From Camp to Justice,” Osinbajo said over 3.4 million Nigerians, mostly women and children, are currently displaced by insurgency, communal clashes, and natural disasters.

Prof Yemi Osibanjo has warned that overcrowded IDP camps, malnutrition, and lack of access to education could have long-term consequences if urgent action is not taken. The former vice president commended the House of Justice for focusing the summit on IDPs and urged stakeholders—government, civil society, and international partners—to work together on practical, actionable solutions.

The Chief Executive Officer of the House of Justice and convener of the summit, Gloria Ballason, criticized government policies, saying they priorities the rehabilitation of insurgents over justice for victims. She highlighted widespread displacement and destruction in Kaduna, Plateau, Benue, Zamfara, Niger, and Kwara states, warning that current non-kinetic programmes such as Operation Safe Corridor and DDRR have not curbed violence. The summit also observed a minute of silence for Nigerians killed in attacks and reiterated calls for urgent action on justice, resettlement, and national healing.

NAE Condemns Scrapping Of National Language

The Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE) has condemned the Federal Government’s decision to scrap the National Language Policy and urged Education Minister Maruf Alausa to restore mother tongue as the medium of instruction at early schooling levels.

In a statement signed by its President, Emeritus Prof. Olugbemiro Jegede, and Secretary General, Prof. Chris Chukwurah, the Academy argued that overwhelming evidence supports early learning in indigenous languages.

It referenced initiatives such as the Ife Six-Year Project and recent bilingual education studies, noting that pupils who begin education in their native languages perform better academically and demonstrate stronger cultural grounding, even in English.

It called for immediate reinstatement of the policy, supported by teacher training, adequate instructional materials, stakeholder engagement and regular evidence-based evaluation to safeguard literacy and protect national heritage.

In a separate statement, the Academy decried the resurgence of school attacks by terrorists, warning that Nigeria’s education system is under siege as repeated invasions have left thousands of learners abducted, hundreds killed, many injured and scores still missing.

The NAE urged government and security agencies to provide full protection for learners and personnel, enforce penalties against perpetrators, strengthen intelligence coordination and deliver trauma care and support to affected families.
