WHEN THE WATERS RISE, GOV. SIM FUBARA STANDS WITH RIVERS PEOPLE
Two years ago, on a day like this—September 5—Governor Siminalayi Fubara took a decisive step that showed he was not only aware of the dangers of flooding but also determined to protect Rivers people from its impact. On that day, the state government rolled out the 2023 Road Map on Flood Mitigation, a policy document designed to reduce the destruction caused by recurring floods.
Governor Fubara, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Mrs. Ngozi Nma Odu, also used the occasion to flag off an immunization campaign and unveil materials for internally displaced persons (IDPs). It was more than just an official ceremony — it was a statement that government was prepared to respond on multiple fronts whenever disaster struck.
By 2024, the Governor went a step further, inaugurating a nine-man Flood Prevention and Management Committee headed by the Deputy Governor. This was no token gesture. The committee had a clear mandate, broken down into three phases:
1. Pre-flood – Sensitizing the public and preparing communities ahead of the floods.
2. During flood – Rolling out quick mitigation measures to minimize losses.
3. Post-flood – Providing relief and helping displaced families rebuild their lives.
Relief materials, food items, and essential support soon reached flood-hit communities, proving that the plan was more than words on paper.
What makes Governor Fubara’s efforts stand out is that his compassion for flood victims did not begin when he assumed office. Long before occupying the Brick House, he had been reaching out through his Switch-On Foundation, offering hope and relief to those devastated by floodwaters across local government areas.
This is why his interventions today feel genuine — they come from a place of lived commitment, not political necessity.
In a state where floods return year after year, leaving trails of destruction, Rivers people are beginning to recognize a leader who not only plans ahead but also shows up when it matters most.
For many, this is why the call for Sim Fubara’s continuity is growing louder. To them, he represents more than governance — he represents safety, empathy, and a genuine concern for lives and property.
At the heart of it all, Governor Fubara has shown that leadership is not just about building roads and bridges, but about standing with people when the waters rise.
