A plant virus that reprograms the immune system to destroy cancer
By Morgan Nwanguma
Plant virus powers immune system to fight cancer—affordable, effective, and nearing clinical trials
A virus that normally infects black-eyed peas is emerging as a surprising weapon against cancer. Known as the cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV), it doesn’t infect people, but it can jumpstart the immune system in ways other plant viruses cannot—turning it into a cancer-fighting force.
Researchers at the University of California San Diego, writing in Cell Biomaterials, discovered that CPMV uniquely sparks strong interferon signals and immune activation, unlike related viruses. This finding helps explain its exceptional performance in preclinical studies, where direct injections of CPMV into tumours triggered waves of neutrophils, macrophages, and natural killer cells to attack cancer, while also priming B and T cells for long-term, body-wide protection.
So far, CPMV has shrunk tumours in multiple mouse models and even in dogs with naturally occurring cancers. Click the link to read more … https://pharmatimes.com.ng/a-plant-virus-that-reprograms-the-immune-system-to-destroy-cancer/

Could artificial intelligence predict cancer? Genomics-based model simulates tumour behavior

By Morgan Nwanguma
Scientists at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) have created software that uses genomic data and mathematical modelling to forecast how cancer cells behave—much like predicting the weather. By pairing patient-specific genetic information with a novel plain-language “hypothesis grammar,” the tool simulates how cells communicate and evolve within tissues.
These digital forecasts allow researchers to explore, in silico, how cancers grow, how immune systems respond, and how different treatments might affect an individual patient.ust as meteorologists track storms, the software predicts shifts in cell activity over time, including the signalling that enables cancer to spread.
The work, co-led by UMSOM’s Institute for Genome Sciences (IGS), was published July 25 in Cell. It represents the culmination of a multi-year, multi-laboratory effort uniting computational, bench, and clinical scientists. Ultimately, the approach could pave the way for “digital twin” of patients—computer models that help doctors identify the most effective treatment strategies for each case of cancer. Handling Menopause: Signs, Symptoms and Management

By Evans Matthews
Menopause is a natural phase in a woman’s life, marking the end of her menstrual cycles and fertility. It typically occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, although some women may experience it earlier or later. While it is a universal biological process, the signs, symptoms, and coping strategies can vary widely depending on cultural, lifestyle, and healthcare factors.
Understanding Menopause
Menopause is officially diagnosed after 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, without other medical causes. It occurs because the ovaries gradually produce less estrogen and progesterone—hormones essential for reproduction… Click the read more https://pharmatimes.com.ng/wp-admin/post.php?post=629&action=edit

AI-Driven Drug Discovery – How Artificial Intelligence is Cutting Years off Drug Development Timelines

By Evans Matthews
For decades, the journey from drug concept to pharmacy shelf has been long, costly, and uncertain. Developing a single new drug often takes more than ten years and costs billions of dollars, with a high risk of failure. Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is rewriting that story—cutting timelines, improving success rates, and giving both local and global pharmaceutical industries a technological edge.
AI’s strength lies in its ability to process vast datasets, predict molecular behavior, and identify promising compounds far faster than traditional methods. By analyzing genetic data, chemical structures, and historical trial results, AI can uncover insights that might take human researchers years to find… Click the link to read more..https://pharmatimes.com.ng/ai-driven-drug-discovery-how-artificial-intelligence-is-cutting-years-off-drug-development-timelines/

FAKE DRUGS AND UNSAFE FOODS: BEYOND INAUGURATION OF FEDERAL TASK FORCE

The recent inauguration of a Federal Task Force to fight counterfeit drugs and unwholesome processed foods in Nigeria marks a significant step towards safeguarding public health and restoring confidence in the nation’s food and medicines supply chain.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Mohammad Ali Pate, had explained that the aim of launching the task force is to safeguard public health, strengthen regulatory enforcement and ensuring that only safe, high quality drugs and food products reach Nigerian consumers. This is laudable… Click the link to read more https://pharmatimes.com.ng/fake-drugs-and-unsafe-foods-beyond-inauguration-of-federal-task-force/

Breakthrough: The Way Radiotherapy Aids the Immune System Destroy cancer

By Morgan Nwanguma
Radiation therapy, once regarded mainly as a local cancer treatment, is now proving capable of awakening the immune system in unexpected ways. New research shows that combining radiation with immunotherapy can turn resistant, “cold” lung tumors into targets for immune attack. This effect, where immune cells are activated throughout the body rather than only at the radiation site, remains rare and not fully understood—but patients whose tumors experienced this shift had significantly better outcomes.
According to scientists at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy and the Netherlands Cancer Institute, radiation therapy can essentially “prime” tumors that normally resist immunotherapy, making them susceptible to treatment and leading to improved results. Canned Drinks: From Germs on Tap to Sipping Smart

Deborah Bamisaye

"Chuks! Chuks!! How you dey now? I hope you have been served, are you ok?" (Clears throat) "You see, you know I no longer take alcohol and that I have successfully replaced it with soft drinks, especially the ones in cans. They get chilled on time and I have come to like them. So, more drinks please, at least to celebrate my victory over alcohol." "Are you kidding me?" Asked Gbenga, "You have taken three (3) cans already or you think I don't know and now you are asking for more? "I beg oh, I'm expecting more guests, you better respect yourself. By the way, did you clean the tap of the drinks before taking them?" Chuks sighed and said "Na that one dey important to you now? Over sabi Doctor! So you knew and you were acting like you cared initially. Give me more drinks, simple! You are there telling me trash..."
Hey there! I hope none of you take canned drinks without cleaning the lid thoroughly? Just tell me only Chuks does.
Do you know that drinking from cans without cleaning the lid (i.e. tap, top, tin cap) thoroughly can expose you to various harmful bacteria and pathogens that may cause illnesses? Asking how? Here: Click the link to read more..

Brain Health - Renewing Your Chocolate 'Subscription'

By Deborah Bamisaye

Yes, there is a 'World Chocolate Day', which is celebrated globally every year on July 7; which means the 2025 edition is celebrated already. This day honours chocolate in all its forms - bars, truffles, cakes, hot chocolate and more. How did it all start? The historical date was in 1550 when chocolate was first introduced to Europe. So, July 7 is significant as it commemorates the beginning of chocolate's global journey and its cultural and culinary evolution.

The celebration began in 2009 and encourages chocolate lovers worldwide to indulge in their favorite treats 'guilt-free.' Scientists convert fungus long linked with curse deaths into a possible anti cancer weapon
By Morgan Nwanguma

Pharaoh's Curse fungus changed to combat cancer.
In an unexpected breakthrough, researchers have turned a once-feared fungus into a promising cancer-fighting ally. Aspergillus flavus, a toxic crop fungus historically linked to deadly spores found in ancient tombs like King Tut’s, has now yielded a powerful new class of molecules called asperigimycins.
Led by scientists at the University of Pennsylvania and collaborating institutions, the team bioengineered these rare fungal RiPPs to enhance their potency. Click the link to read more ..
