..appealed to Agege Local Government Ag. Chairman, Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa and member representing Agege Constituency 02 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Honourable Hon Jubreel Ayodeji Abdulkareem to Intervene.

The Two ‘Killer manholes’ spotted along Akilo Road, Agege Lagos-Nigeria are possing serious danger to Motorists and other unsuspecting R
road users along this corridoor especially at night.

When one of our reporters from visited the road, he said "It is an eyesore to have such manholes on our roads."

He collected few sticks and some used tyres to serve as warning signs, so as to prevent unsuspecting motorists from running into them, but few days after we discovered that the sticks and tyres have been washed away.

There have been reports of road accidents at this spot involving unsuspecting vehicles that almost claimed lives of most passengers at different occasions.

The two huge deep manholes which motorists described as “ ” has been on the road for months and still counting.

The manholes, described as death traps, started as small potholes some few years ago, but was not attended to and now have widened and deepened, leading to spiraling fatalities and had become a gauntlet for commuters, drivers and riders who ply the stretch regularly.

The menace has resulted in heavy vehicular traffic that snarled up mostly in the early hours of the day as cars are forced to slow down to avoid running into them.

Mr Adebayo Suleiman, a resident of Agege told Agegetv Agege AGEGE TV- AGEGE Television 08037224118 Online; “Every week I witness at least three to four accidents at that spot”.

He said the carnage prompted him to be filling the pothole with sand and stones from time to time to help curb the situation, but he stopped because of a near-death experience he encountered while filling potholes.

He expressed worry over motor riders who use the road, recounting how a pair on a motorbike were nearly rammed over by heavyweight truck after falling from it in bumps.

A Nurse expressed worry over school children who cross the road regularly, stating that, “motorists after running into the potholes most often lost control of the vehicle and veered onto the sidewalks endangering lives of pedestrians”.

The manholes has become a life threatening to motorists. We are using this medium to call on The Lagos State Government The Lagos State Government and other concerned
authorities of urban roads to salvage the situation.

UPDATED: Tinubu removes Sanda, drug peddlers, others from fresh pardon list.

The presidency has released a fresh list of inmates granted Presidential Clemency.

Bayo Onanuga, Presidential spokesman, released the fresh list on Wednesday.

Daily Trust observed that many names were struck off the list.

Earlier in the month, Onanuga had announced that the president pardoned some persons.

However, the names of some convicts, who were on death sentence, life imprisonment, for murder, drug trafficking, illegal mining among others, had triggered outrage.

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar had said clemency granted to people convicted of serious offences weakened public faith in the criminal-justice system and “emboldens criminality.”

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, National Publicity Secretary of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), had described the move as an abuse of the presidential power of mercy, adding that it is “a national disgrace”.

Different human right groups and various associations had also commented on the development.

Amid the controversy, Lateef Fagbemi, Minister of Justice, said while the Committee that he chaired recommended clemency for the convicts, none of them had been released.

He said the list was being subjected to further scrutiny as a result of public reaction.

In a statement, on Wednesday, Onanuga announced that some names had been dropped.

“President Bola TInubu, GCFR, has executed the relevant instruments of release to complete the process of formally exercising his constitutional power of prerogative of mercy to grant pardon and clemency to specific individuals who were earlier convicted for various offences.”

“Following consultations with the Council of State and public opinion on the matter, the President directed a further review of the initially approved list for consideration in furtherance of the President’s discretionary powers under Section 175(1)(&(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“Consequently, certain persons convicted of serious crimes such as kidnapping, drug-related offences, human trafficking, fraud, unlawful possession of firearms/arms dealing, etc, were deleted from the list. Others who had been hitherto pardoned in the old list had their sentences commuted.

“”This action became necessary in view of the seriousness and security implications of some of the offences, the need to be sensitive to the feelings of the victims of the crimes and society in general, the need to boost the morale of law enforcement agencies and adherence to bilateral obligations. The concept of justice as a three-way traffic for the Accused, the Victim, and the State/Society also guided the review.

“The approved list of eligible beneficiaries has been transmitted to the Nigerian Correctional Service for implementation in line with the duly signed instruments of release.

“Furthermore, to ensure that future exercises meet public expectations and best practices, the President has directed the immediate relocation of the Secretariat of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy from the Federal Ministry of Special Duties to the Federal Ministry of Justice.

“President Tinubu also directed the Attorney-General of the Federation to issue appropriate Guidelines for the Exercise of the Power of Prerogative of Mercy, which includes compulsory consultation with relevant prosecuting agencies.

“This will ensure that only persons who fully meet the stipulated legal and procedural requirements will henceforth benefit from the issuance of instruments of release.

“The President appreciated the constructive feedback and engagement from stakeholders and the general public on this matter.
