I see many bakers, especially new bakers and home bakers price cakes based on ingredient costs.

Are you also setting price based on this type of costing? - You need to stop it.

When you price cakes using only ingredient cost, you will get prices that seem affordable.

And a lot of ‘YES’ from customers; making you feel busy.

This type of costing is wrong because -

- You don’t get real profit, if any.

- You don’t get financial stability.

- And you definitely don’t get growth;
because ingredient cost alone does not make up your full cake cost.

However, when you price your cakes based on production cost, you get predictable and profitible prices that assures your business of sustainability and growth.

This is where the shift in costing clarity comes in. That moment when you move from "What did I spend?’ to ‘What did it take to produce this cake?"

Pricing with ingredient cost is like calculating transport fare based only on fuel— and ignoring the driver, the car, the repairs, and the travel time.

Pricing right and making profit isn’t about costing flour, butter, sugar and eggs. Pricing right is about the entire production process.
When you price based on ingredient cost, you end up:

– Working long hours for small money

– Feeling tired but still broke

– Thinking customers are the problem

– Constantly adjusting prices without clarity.
But when you price with production cost:

– You set selling prices without guilt

– You pay yourself properly

– You cover overheads confidently and have enough cash flow

– You build a cake business that can actually grow.
Every baker I’ve worked with who fixed their pricing, didn’t change recipes—
instead, they changed how they calculated cost.

👉 Same cakes.
👉 Better prices.
👉 Real profit.

If you really want to stop underpricing and start pricing to cover actual costs and make real profits, you need to start costing your cakes using production-cost method.

And your business will be the better for it.

Which of these cost methods do you currently use to calculate price for your cakes; Ingredient costs or Production cost?

An income goal without a sales breakdown is just wishful thinking.

When you turn your annual goals into:
• Monthly targets
• Weekly cake volume
• Daily action

It all becomes less overwhelming.

₦6,000,000 a year doesn’t require baking every day. It requires clarity, strategy, and realistic pricing.

Have you set an income goal for your business before? Did you achieve your set targets?

I would love to know. Comment YES if you have or NEVER if you're yet to.

An income goal is not motivation — it’s calculation + strategy.

It tells your business exactly what it is responsible for producing.
Without it, you guess.
With it, you plan.

When you know how much your business must generate, based on:
• How much you need to pay yourself
• How much your business cost to stay operational
• How much profit you want to reinvest

Pricing stops being emotional and starts becoming strategic.

This is how profitable bakers think.
And it’s the foundation of every sustainable cake business.
