Filming Africa

Filming Africa FILMING AFRICA... The African Guide to Everything Film. We seek to serve as a guidepost, to provide bearings as we grow in the art form.

Filming Africa is a film industry resource started in an effort to create a new forum to promote artistic expression and support diversity in filmmaking by Africans and the global black film community. With the increasing interest in motion picture, and with the rise of the African cinema, Filming Africa takes its place as a platform for the filmmaker who shares a sincere interest in the unlimited

scope of the motion picture. We talk everything film; television series, short films, narrative features, documentaries, literature, as well as independently produced experimental and underground works. Filming Africa seeks to deliver not just film news but analysis, reviews, opinion and commentary on the issues, people and products shaping the African film industry and the global black film community.

Here’s the Filming Africa Top 10 Nollywood Directors of 2025 — presented in no particular order.

This was the only list this year where ranking proved impossible, as every director selected delivered outstanding work. In fact, while we call it a Top Ten, our members were ultimately able to agree on nine directors, each of whom made a remarkable impact in 2025.

We also included one non-Nigerian director on this list. At Filming Africa, we view Nollywood not only as Nigeria, but as the wider Nigerian creative effect across Africa and the diaspora. For this reason, we added Shirley Frimpong-Manso for her direction of the Nollywood film Stitches, in recognition of her significant contributions to Nollywood and African cinema as a whole.

FILM DIRECTORS:

Asurf Oluseyi - 3 Cold Dishes
Obi Emelonye - Safari
Ikechukwu Jerry Ossai - Ms. Kanyin
Okechukwu Oku - Blackout
Wingonia Ikpi - The Lost Days
Daniel Etim-Effiong - The Herd
Kayode Kasum - The Serpent’s Gift
Afolabi Olalekan - Freedom Way

Men? In Hollywood?

Vanity Fair’s 32nd Hollywood Issue is all about men. New editor Mark Guiducci says the era of untouchable matinee idols is over — today’s stars are your “internet boyfriends.” Jeremy Allen White, ASAP Rocky, Glen Powell & more show a chummy, nostalgic vibe across three covers. They’re real, approachable, and just a half-inch out of reach. Hollywood is changing — and VF is here for it.
